No snow here. Just cold. It was -11 this morning at the house when I woke up. I think it might be 3 now. High might have been 12.

So much for 'meteorological spring' or whatever that BS term the weather folks keep throwing around.

Had a great service call this morning.... this guy bought a brand new Quad Cumberland Gap (woodstove) and said it wouldn't heat his house. He owns his own tree service and has been "burning wood since before I was born" in his exact words. I talked to him on the phone a couple times and my employer finally pulled the trigger and sent me out there with a wood bag full of dry pine.

I get there and he has some coals in the stove, perfect. I open the side door which he assures me is worthless. I fill this thing to the brim with splits. He has been burning said stove with BOTH the main and startup air control wide open. His yard is FULL of hardwood, mostly branches/rounds just piled up in the mud, no stacking, no splitting. I ask him how long his wood has been sitting, he says "around 9 months".

I ask him for a splitting maul so he brings me one. I pull out the moisture meter and check the end of one of his logs. 8% fine and dandy, and he says "I told you it's dry". I split that exact round in half and test the center. I'm no firewood EXPERT but I'm 85% certain this was white ash. The center reads 28% moisture on the inside of the split. Meanwhile the pine is getting up to a roaring fire....

I shut the stove down and tell him I need to go grab my paperwork (mostly need to get away from the irrational know it all tree guy lol). Come in and hang out and pet the dog for a few and watch him sip Pepsi directly from the 2 litre for about 20 minutes. I got his thermostat in his living room to see a 10F gain in around an hour and shut his furnace off....

He still swears up and down the stove is broken and won't work unless both the air controls are open despite my explanation of proper wood splitting, stacking and drying. When I left the stovetop temp (cast iron jacket over steel box mind you) is at 650f, almost worried I over-fired it but I know it will calm down shortly. He is mostly upset the heat doesn't travel to the bedrooms around the corner and about 20 feet down the hall in his 1968 double wide trailer....

You just can't fix stupid sometimes.

Other than that, 4 Quad MT Vernon AE igniters under warranty this week and it's almost time for a pork shoulder cook on SUNDAY! YAAAAAAY!

Kroosher I just saw that you are from Waupaca, I have a lot of family there. Nice place to live, wouldn't mind moving that way once my kids are grown.

That's brutal. We get that pretty rarely in CO and when it did I realized just how badly I need to insulate my crawlspace. That's my fun job for Summer YAY! Hope it warms up for you guys! We were at -18 night and 0 high for a week and a half and let's just say my armpits were a stinkin. Luckily no broken pipes but it was SOME WORK and some ELECTRICITY.

5 F here now, when in heck is the chit ever going to quit? Good part is the house is nice and warm. Couldn't ask for better. Bigger stove is better. forecast is temps up to 40F come Saturday. Think I shut the stove down tomorrow and do some cleaning, just because.

I hear ya man, -2 right now. I'm taking my son to preschool this a.m., and gonna stop at a pellet house up the road and pick up as many as they will let me have. Only 25 left in the basement. Gonna be decent for the next few days, then snow and cold.

On a better note, the wife scored two passes to Sunday River for $60. Normal price is $87 a piece.

Hope you find some pellets, most everyone is out, they get them in, but only last a few hours. Have a fun time at Sunday River!
