Those gauges can get sticky in extreme cold - been there, done that - ONCE only. I learned not to trust them and would rap against the tank to determine the approximate level. Never let it get below 1/4 tank as that is when it seems to go the fastest.

Hope you honey's pipes make it thru okay!

Well, she uses the same oil company I do- Rymes Heating

They told here they cannot deliver until 1/15- TWO FCING WEEKS !!!

She is an established customer who use them regularly but they wont budge.

We will both be looking for new oil companies

Rymes Heating use to be a responsive company, but several years ago they began buying up other small companies. Since then, their service has dropped at a regular rate.

Too bad, but this is exactly what I was afraid of happening with them. You need their service in an emergence and they tell you "sorry, we cannot help you" after being a dedicated customer for many years.

After making a few calls, I found Estes Oil that would help her out. She isn't an established customer yet they will make room for her delivery at some point today and try to restart the boiler.

And yes, after 1/4 tank it the level drops quickly. I try not to let it go below 1/3.

What really pizzed me off with Rymes was their lack of concern in this cold and the "oh well" attitude towards an established long term customer-at least Angie at Estes oil was a normal person to talk with and she was very helpful.

I guess I should call Phil just to get on his delivery list although I'm long ways from needing 100 gallons yet.

I used them exactly once - in the first apartment we had when we moved here in '87; we were in 1 of 3 apartments in a converted house and the owner required us to use them. Rymes filled the oil tank when we requested, then came by 3 days later and "filled" it again instead of the next house over. They overfilled our tank (it was indoors and they were oblivious) and left a bill for 120 gallons. Our tank was only 100 gallons. When we called the landlord and Rymes to complain and tell them about the mess in the basement floor and the smell in the house they somehow figured we had already used at least 50 gallons - in that 3 days.

Yeah, never used them again - even when they were the cheapest. Was more than happy to support another smaller, local company for the next 26 years - until I no longer used oil.

You find out a lot about people when you need the help, and get "shined on" G. Been there w/ another (big) oil company in our area, a few years ago. Like you, smaller company bought out by larger/regional company. Gone was the customer service that Angie @ Estes Oil gave to you today - Props - to her for being a caring human being this morning & helping you out.

Don't let them keep you steamed up, G... Because then "they" win. And quite frankly, they don't give a ... :fart:

Vote with your wallet - get 'em where it hurts.

To be fair, even though I don't like them, they had on the news today that will-call customers are being scheduled out to 1/15/18 because of the high demand.

I would expect that automatic delivery customers are better off as the computer models should have predicted the increased needs for those customers (at least I assume thee use models much as propane companies do)

Rymes is not really "big". They are a family owned, local company that, kudos to them, helped a lot of customers 2014-2015 when another private company (Fred Fuller) went bankrupt (couldn't make deliveries even on pre-paid stuff). From my understanding, back then they worked with stranded customers and honored the pre-pay prices. I thought then that they must have changed and was glad they stepped in.

If you’re truly out of oil you can always get a big fuel can and fill up with diesel. Will be a little pricey but better than nothing.

I remember that also B, and yes, it was good they stepped in, but G's treatment this a.m. as a "number" was either indifference on the CSR's part, or a general attitude that persists / is known to -> vetted down from Management: either way, it sucks.

And I'm fully aware I may be 'projecting' my own bad prior experience onto G's situation, but will stand by the post: because the situation he encountered certainly isn't "unique", in my view. Only trying to convey to G that it's not worth getting his BP overly elevated about it.

The CSR certainly didn't offer any alternative options, or attempt to elevate the call from G. Hence, the "shine on" statement.
