No. You can clean it without pulling it out except for a major clean whereas you pull blower motors and fines box (once a year) You can even do some basic backside repairs with out completely removing the insert. Harman has videos on line on how to clean.

Can't comment on pellet insert, but if you did buy that house and did put a freestanding pellet infront of the fireplace, this might make a difference for you & 99. Dave, the space around pellet (my experience anyway) is usable compared to the hot buffer zone around my woodstoves, we walk right by it within inches where we give a couple feet walking around the wood. Put it this way, I even have 2 large floor house plants within a foot of the pellet stove, we all know they would be fried dead with wood, and badbob had a pic here at one time he had his vinyl record collection in shelf near his pellet stove.

Might be educational to look at a manual of any models you are thinking about. That should give you the maintenance schedule and an idea of what said maintenance entails.

Welcome to the world of pellets Yoop!!

Enviro M55 Cast Insert heats my house (2600 sq ft), obviously upstairs is colder than down. Sliding the insert out is not difficult and I try to do this maintenance after every 1.5 ton burned.

I’m reviving this thread because I’m in a similar position of little pellet experience and looking at inserts, and wanted to link to the good advice above.

TLDR: Have looked at new Harman and Enviro M55 Cast, and Englander. Grappling with budget. Considering venturing into CL world to get better name stove for better price. Thoughts on buying used?

Longer version: Parents find need to move back into Maine farmhouse for the winter. Previous occupant froze the baseboard heat on one end of the house and then removed some, and the boiler is at end of life. Wood stove on the kitchen end of the house, wanting to put a pellet insert into the living room on other end to spread out the heat horizontally. They are in their 80’s and don’t want another wood stove to feed. They were unaware of the routine maintenance until I sat dad down with the Harman vids. At this point they are lukewarm about pellet stove. It was their idea originally, but I’m still researching because it would at least be a good Fall and Spring option for them ( I’m afraid they need to revive the baseboards for the winter, so not wanting to sink $5K into a partial solution, but this will buy some time).

Is your 80 something father going to be able to carry 40 lb. bags of pellets?

He generally tries to out-work me, at least until he blew out a tendon in his knee doing the long jump at a corporate track meet this summer. One option is a stash of bags nearby that we replenish as needed.

Picture from the 40’s, largely the same today. Kitchen is at the far end. Pellet stove would be at the near chimney. Oil burner on near chimney in separate flue. Never had heat upstairs. We didn’t linger once out of bed in the winter.

Even better than just used, how about a factory refurb? These come with full factory warranty, and free shipping to a loading dock near you, or delivered to your doorstep for about $70 ?(I think). Great people to do business with....I did and never regretted it.

55-TRPEPI - PELLET BURNING INSERT - 2,000 sq. ft. (Factory refurbished)
