Hey trail twister sir-Thank You for your service. As I related above, they pulled out around 1970 and had the option to take them all, a few ended up in the pipe yard-They wouldn’t be usable now to them and they prob wouldn’t want to pay my storage bill for keeping them “Spect we’ll call it even....
Thank billb3 , I learned something new however it did distort it....I chose the medium size-just kinda neat, the bend in my drive is nowhere near that sharp-I’ll keep toying with it-you press the shutter button and move it over the scope of the pic you want to capture...Thx again
Looking good ash! Ive liked that rail set up since i first saw your stacks. Single row and high off the ground. Do you know how heavy the rail sections are?
Thanks buZZsaw BRAD , it works well for me. Shouldn’t be hard to figure the weight, I just haven’t taken time to do so. They are 36’ long (the full one) and the new one is @33’. I have one long one left and maybe 2 shorts that may be 12’ long, haven’t figured what that will hold or decided to put it up but likely will. Have a great day all!
I have always thought your setup was A-1 since the first time I saw it way back when Ashwatcher . You make great use of them rails for sure.
WOW! There are some sections of track near me that ive seen and considered scrounging them for wood piles or scrap. Scrap that idea! Thanks for the info Erik B
Usually saplings. Sometimes small logs and I cut both to 9 or 10'. I even have some old fence posts that I'm using now. A couple of pine trees that died also got used for stacking wood on. We're not too fussy but too cheap to buy anything.
Thanks Erik B - was that x 2 per section? I’m sure it was, just checking-Listen to me, the non-math guy
Rail weight is figured by 3 foot sections. On the side of the rail should be date, manufacturers and size/weight. The oldest stuff we ride on at work (generally in railroad yards and old factory sidings) is 85 lb rail. 85lbs/3 foot. Most of our main line stuff is 130 lb. Taller the profile, higher the poundage.
85 lb is around 5 inches tall and 130 lb is 6 3/4 inches tall according to a friend who works for the maintenance of way department
The weight I posted was for main line rail and I did see the 130lbs per yard. An easier way to figure the weight is to add the length of all of the rails and multiply by the weight per foot.
Talk about doing something right the first time! Every time I see one of your posts I can’t help but think how bad azz that is and geek out just thinking about how well it has to work. I was thinking about building a large wood shed in a couple of years. I really like your set up. Now I am considering building some totally over constructed racks instead that I will never have to replace. Sadly I won’t be able to use rails. I have a 5’ piece and it’s a mother to move, can’t imagine what yours was like to move. Cutting off a 10” piece makes a great anvil FYI.
Since it is so hot and humid I thought I would do something easy. I picked up 5 plastic pallets for a new stacking area. I wanted to get 6 but the last one wouldn't fit in my SUV. I will go back and pick up another 5 pallets.
