Depending on your stove, those high coaling woods can be great shoulder season heat too...just load a small load up and let it burn long enough to get to the coaling stage, then cut the air off and enjoy the "low n slow" heat from the coals. This works good unless you have a short chimney, or one that is prone to reversing draft on you.
Are ya married? A single guy can turn heat low and save on fuel; my wife and daughter not so much.. Getting firewood in feet of snow is a pita
I don’t know about out there, but TSC, Rural King, & Lowe’s here have yanked all things winter. Stoopid. But we all know how the retail model works.
Maybe down there in the tropics of Wiffle...up here there is still some lingering winter stuff out...
Good to know. Thinking back to last weekend, I did see some pellets out on the sidewalk @ TSC- but that was all. edit to add- “Maybe down there in the tropics of Wiffle” Snowed here overnight, not too much tho.
I've been watching your weather this winter. Brutal to say the least. Been the opposite so far here in central PA. Good luck to you.
Our first season burning (spring semester 2021) we only had enough because we burned for just a few months. Our second (and first full) season, we thought we had enough, but water coming through the top coverings of 2 stacks kept maybe a cord of wood from drying well. We had to pillage from the stacks of stuff that wasn't supposed to be dry yet. We had some sizzling logs, and the MM went out of the numerical values and started swearing at me. I really did think about buying "seasoned" wood. And bio bricks. We'd have used a helluva lot of pallet wood had we chosen that route. I went through the workshop and scrounged mill ends. Any old furniture or buildings that might give up their wood handy? Any sawmills that sell slabbed off pieces for a reasonable price? That might take just one spring/summer/fall to season up..
We got a trace too...maybe you got more than us! We are somewhere 30"+ shy of normal snowfall this winter! Overall precip is up though
That stinks, bro. I wish I could donate a cord or two to you. But think of all the money you’ve saved on propane so far this winter! That’s a win in my book! So… Sit back, crack a beer and let the furnace hum!
I’m not sure of our snow deficit except that if we’ve received a season total of 3 inches, that would be a lot. Truly disappointing this year. But plenty of rain, yes.
I’m not musically inclined…more likely to be the one breaking my back bringing in wood splits. Probably only 14hrs to get to SD Steve … it’s been cold here but I can spare a little! Of all the advice I’ve heard, the pallet one sounds the best. Lots of extra work, but saves you facing the same issue in future years. Hopefully Spring arrives soon!
<cracks knuckles and opens google maps> aaaannnnnd....you all don't have any trees out there! Was going to scout for a scrounge area...no trees! Is your stove Coal compatible?
Lot of what I have even the ash is 20-25%. I haven’t tested the cherry pile. he’s like two hours from me though if he’s in the Aberdeen area.
What decade was the last time you weren’t 3 years ahead?? 60s I played game with oil heater why I got a stove
