Enjoy the milling Dave. It can be fun although it has been many moons since I've done any I still have the memories.

Can't help but feel sorry for the pup. I've seen some really nasty ones but even a couple can hurt them a lot. So how did you go about getting the quills out?

I was able to get them to my vet that afternoon, you have to knock them out to make sure you get them all and to not get bit when pulling them out, especially when they are in the snout like they always are, I've been quilled, it hurts way worse coming out.

I trapped another one overnight last night. The dogs picked up on it before I could even see the trap on our walk this morning, a few hundred feet from the trap. One of the two that got quilled the other day turned around and went home, the other made a big arc around the trap, so maybe they learned?...they've been quilled before though, so I don't know...I'm hopeful. The other three dogs stayed with me and I let the porky out with them right there, it walked right by Oliver on its way to climb a tree, he did not react to it, the others just kept their distance.

Looks like you’ve figured out how to load your logs already, but check out parbuckling some time. This was used before hydraulics and tractors. With the low trailer, you could probably load them with your JD that way.

    Nice screened porch!

One thing I don’t miss about Maine porcupines and skunks- none in my area here.

What’d you use for the screen porch- is it a magnetic clip type?

The screens are on a track at the top and snaps on the sides and bottom. There is a magnetic door at one of the posts too.

No skunks seen yet, I'm sure they're around, at least neither are lethal. I'd probably have to have a stash of anti venom in your area, the little Jack/Beagle is obsessed with snakes.

Great pics of the wood and home site Dave, dogs in pain, not so great. We have a lot of Quillpigs here as well. We even see them eating the grass in the spring. Hopefully the dogs will be fine from here on in.

Anti venom is rarely administered to dogs. Unlike humans they don’t get all worked up and will just go lay around and mope for a couple days. Minnie our 18lb piglet chiwinnie is the only one to have been tagged by a pit viper in her front armpit -not sure what kind her belly turned bruised color. Vet put her on antibiotics and she was back to normal in a few days.

Did a little milling with my buddy today. I know nothing about saw mills but this looks like a nice mill and set up. The blade pivots 90 degrees.

I brought a few cedar logs that weren't hollow and all kinds of twisted, wishing for some 4x4 posts and some 2x4 for the ground contact part of the chicken coop I will be building.

Here's today's take, the longer 2x4 are either pine or spruce, the shorter stuff is cedar. Some thick cedar slabs for planks over the wet spots on my trails. We worked for about 4 hours but took our time and he explained a lot. He kept some lumber for himself too.

That’s sweet known as swing blade mills.

That's great DaveGunter! Looking forward to the build!

We've had a porcupine last week and again last evening. Seems they can climb trees way faster than they can walk.

Hopefully they move on. Maple has been chasing Jack rabbits, there's a ton of them everywhere this year!

It was fun seeing the hack rabits at the G2G! Hopefully Maple stays away from Porky though.

:hair:, got another Porky yesterday, just a baby, I think it was an orphan, that makes 9 since we've been here, Oakley showed it to me, he kept going back to the same area and barking, I finally saw it when he actually pulled it out from under a rock!...not sure how but he did not have any quills in his mouth.

Chickens might be awhile, the spot I want to put the coop and run still needs some ground work. I can't seem to get the contractor back here to do the work, it's been so wet this spring he's behind and I'm sure he got bigger $ projects in the works.

It's big excavator and some dozer work for sure. The drive need to be dressed with a few inches of fines, some pretty big stumps pulled and boulders moved and probably another 150 yards or so of fill brought in and spread around. We are going to let that settle out for the summer and then some loam this fall to get some stuff growing in the ground around the house to hold everything in place.

Finally, 10 months later, got the site work contractor back yesterday to finish up some final grading around the house and top dress the drive with some fines. We had no issues with water in the basement, but I'd like to get the water moving around the house so we can keep the dirt where it is and start some planting...been two years without a proper garden. Started yesterday, should finish up today. I'm taking the day off to supervise cuz I'm gonna get it the way I want it;).
