Grouse or partridge (same bird) crows.. heck the male Robin I had (in heat) knocked himself out on the reflections in my bath window... really depends on speed more than size..
Not cool it happened, but better than humans tearing stuff up and stealing. I had a bird Wake Me Up one morning smacking into my bedroom window, then the goofy bird did it two more times
I have had too many humming birds/small or birds, and once a magpie hit the window, always sad to see if they do not make it out alive though most of them did. The loudest bang I ever heard in 20 years shook the house, I thought it was hydraulic spring on the oversized double garage door opener (garage door was just repaired), or the 50gal pressure tank in the crawl space. Nope, both were just fine. Must have been a large bird on a picture window, we had Golden Eagles and a family of those giant white owls around that fall. I lived there too many years for it to be a small or med bird. I wonder about Stinny window, duck? Goose?
I was hit in the passenger window and mirror by an owl on the highway at 70 MPH. The mirror took the brunt of it, this was a new F-150 with the large mirrors, to say there was nothing left of the mirror is an understatement. The force of the bird hitting the window sounded like a brick. And there was a 3 inch stripe of bird poop from the window to the taillight. Of course, I realize the cabin was going nowhere near as fast as 70..............
Was it poop or entrails, which are pre-poop in the way of things? Let me guess--- you sniffed this "Streak?" J/K NHMM
Nope, just tried to figure how I was gonna explain the one to the insurance co. But they were good about it
When I first called the sheriff's ofc I just asked what the procedure was to report a break-in at our cabin if we needed to, and I then suggested that I didn't know what had happened yet and that maybe I should wait until the next day when we could get up there to check it out. The dispatcher just kept right on doing her thing and started the info needed. She then had a dep call me back and we also decided to wait until I had a chance to see the window. This dep was waiting on my call (supposedly) after we had been to the cabin. 3 hours after my first call, I got the call from another dep who was already at the cabin (had walked in 1/2 mile with another cop along the soft mucky road, in places, almost dark by then) ... and this dep said he couldn't be sure if it was a bird strike or a vandal, but he didn't think anyone had gone in the cabin. That's what we knew the next morning when we went up... it was a jail bird that dun it...
Stinny there are game cams now that as soon as triggered, send a picture to your cell phone. Even if they steal it, you already have the pictures. Put one in the cabin, and 1 on the road to get a vehicle pic. They aren't cheap at $500 plus each, but security usually isn't cheap.
If a bird hit the window hard enough to break the window like that...AND mangle the screen, uh, where's the dead bird? Maybe something came and ate the evidence? Uncle Jed......Jethro? There's usually feathers around when that happens though.
There was a little bit of feathers on the window above it. One of the cops and I talked about the probability that either a fox or coyote probably got the bird. We always hear coyotes up there... prolly one of them got a free turkey dinnah...
Had a place in the mountains west of here. Had a very large picture window facing west in the living room. We did not go there much in the winter. One spring, as the snow was melting, we headed up there to check the place out. There were a couple feathers in the snow on the deck under the window and a couple of bird bones in the bushes well off to the side. Started a fire, cleaned up, and settled in to watch the sunset and have a drink. As the setting sun hit the window a smudged outline appeared. It appeared to be of a large bird about the size of a red tailed hawk. The outline looked like a Polish eagle (see below). It looked like the hawk was chasing something, realized too late that there was a window, and could not stop. This was an old heavy piece of glass so it did not break. I guess by the time we got there the scavengers had scattered the carcass. KaptJaq
I'm guessing there is no coverage on the cabin.... Does homeowners cover this kind of bird strike/broken glass at home?...If there is a policy.
Look at window world talk to your local dealer... lifetime warranty put them in apartment building so far covered broken windows from baseball, weed Wacker and stupidity the have my numbers on file just pick upper or lower pane a and screen 5 minutes... I think a lot has to do with owner of independent chain but it may help..
I have had windows broken out twice by pheasants. It broke their neck. in your case, some other animal would quickly make a meal of it. That can happen any time of year. Doesn't matter if you are there or away. Sorry it happened.
