This is too easy. Once the wife sees the flameshow in either a PH or IS she'll kick you in the shins for waiting so long.
The pain will subside rather quickly. Woodstock stoves are an aphrodisiac. ;)

yeah this is so true.. if your wife likes to a glass of wine after work... it according to my wife very romantic! I loaded my IS at 11 am because Saturday mornings we all curl up in master bedroom and have family time....so an easy 15 hours.. 8 hours later she just asked me not to fill it for nite as its too warm... over 8 hours later... there will be coals when I let dog out at 6 am...

If you want a wood stove that does what your coal stove did with a nice long consistent burn I would go straight to Blaze King. They are the only stoves with a proper thermostat setup and they can accomplish that. You set it and forget it.

The Ideal Steel is a great woodstove. It puts out a lot of heat and if you nurse it you will get great burn times. It will never keep even temperatures though. It is a manually controlled stove that cycles between hybrid technologies to burn the smoke. Adjustments need to be made throughout the burn to extend it. I have done 24 + hour burns with it. However, adjustments (after initial overnight burn) every 4 hours or so were needed to accomplish that. You could fill the firebox full of wood, set the air, and come back 12 hours later to charcoal bodies in the stove but the temperatures would definitely taper off with no adjustment. The good news is that during the 12 hours the stove would pump a lot of heat into your house if it can be retained.

I just wanted to make sure you understand that a 12 hour burn with the Ideal Steel is not steady heat for 12 hours. I still highly recommend the stove.

Wow dude! Thanks for the offer. If I do this I may order it today due to the sale even though I won't be doing anything with it until next burn season. If I don't order it today I'm in no rush and may take you up on the offer.

That's pretty much what I am looking for a set and forget like I get with coal but without the black coal dust and fly ash. I'm trying to find out if the BK has a rear flue exit as an option.

Unfortunately, no rear vent option for BK.

A very simple adjustment ever so often should be no big task. A child could take care of it. I think it sort of falls into the category of folks who cry about cat stoves being more technical because you have to adjust the bypass whereas you don't on a non cat stove. I always said, "Wow! You have to move 2 levers instead of one. Pretty technical huh?" Complicated too.

There are pretty big differences between the Ideal Steel and Blaze King Princess. The Princess may own the bottom end burner prize for steady heat, but the Ideal Steel will pull away pretty strong on the medium to high burns. The benefit of the hybrid stove is the more complete combustion on a high burn. With your square footage a stove with better high end performance may be desirable.

Backwoods Savage, that's pretty good, maybe I'll have my 6 yr old man the thing...in all seriousness I have no issues adjusting a few knobs/levers.

JA600L, since I need rear flue to even make this a possibility the BK is out. Not having experience with either of these products, or wood burners in general I'll take your word for it and the logic makes sense to me.

Canadian border VT , thanks for the pictures, i really like the look of that stove.

I called WS today about ordering, looks like I'll be waiting till spring; I thought I could order one now and take advantage of the tax credit and their sale. Delivery would have to be before the end of the year, I'm not ready to install, still have 3 tons of coal to burn for this season.

Babaganoosh If I can convince my wife to take a ride I would love to catch a look at the IS in person. When you get a chance can you PM a zip or nearby town?

After 27 stubborn years of burning coal in a furnace ( plus my grandpa used it before him when he was a kid), my dad finally gave in to my mom's request. He tore it out, cleaned up the years of dirt and mess, and put in a clean burning gas furnace. No more ashes. No more dirt. Kind of makes me wonder why I don't just use my heat pump.... Oh I know why! I need that hot spot to sit and fall asleep..

well I pulled the trigger back in June and got her all hooked up last month. I ended up with the progress hybrid after visiting Woodstock soapstone. my wife loved it, me too. I ended up demoing the hearth to one course then pouring concrete, adding a steel beam in the basement, and going with rainbow stone for the pad. thanks to all who offered input.

question on the Tee snout into collar before I fire it up. I crimped the snout and used a ratchet strap, around the T and stove with 2x3's to spread the load, and got the thing pretty tight, then screwed it in thru the collar. I held a lighter around the collar to snout and I'm not seeing and leaks. do any of you guys see anything wrong with using a strap to get the tight fit? note, I did not go crazy like strapping cargo in my truck. I was able to pull on the strap and gain a little movement. with strap off and snout screwed on there is no movement in my tee/liner.

I'm not sure what part you call the "snout" but it doesn't have to be air tight anyway. It should have enough of a constant vacuum that the air will be going the other way. The important part is the screws in case of a backfire. So always remember to screw your snout.

2400, but it only needs to keep the upstairs above 58, we are never up there anyway. at some point I'll have a custom cover made for the fireplace opening, unless I can find something pre made. I'm also 2"too close top my mantle, I need a heat shield.

All these posts and I am still REALLY confused about what it is you are calling a "snout".
