Honestly Chris, I don't think they had any idea they would become a legend. At the time these were built, Virgin timber stands all over the world were being exploited and the demand for a high - caliber saw was there. A lot of these saws were used beyond repair. This one looks almost like new, and being it's all original, I wish I had the money to buy it. Probably would never even use the dang thing!! Can't justify a 3k dollar shop decoration either!!

The ONLY saw that could compete with the Mac Super Pro 125.Sometimes the Mac won,sometimes the 090,usually was a tie though.Depending on the wood,fuel mix,how engine was tuned,temperature & humidity etc. Mac is 123cc vs 137,weighs 7 lbs less & horsepower was pretty much even.
It's a beauty for sure! But even if it was NIB and never fueled, I couldn't spend that money. It would have to stay in that condition. On a shelf in my basement. As Scotty said above, a man can dream though.. My dream is a 661 and a 36" Granberg One day..
090's sure are a blast. I had one for a year or two, it was a fun saw. But honestly... If you have the want for a big saw, look no further than a 6 cube Homelite! Cant beat the displacement, power, nostalgia, and build quality for the money! That is a clean looking 090 though, mine had been used but was still a nice looker.
How does an 880 compare? 880 is 8.6hp, 13,000 rpm 121.6cc,and 22.3lbs 090 is 8.5hp, 8000rpm, 136.8cc, and ??lbs?
The 090 came in a couple different flavors but I'm pretty sure the HP number is up closer to 13. I'm not a historian tho but I bet somebody here knows.
090, 090G and 090AV. I'm not sure if the AV engine was the same as the 090? The "G" is basically a 070 engine (106cc) with a gear reduction. The Stihl documents are saying 8.5hp. The torque might be higher than an 880, I'm not sure. All in all its a neat saw, but its 60+ yr old design has been improved on "just a bit" over the years.
That was a s.a.e. rating, same as what dolmar used for the longest time. I don't know the conversion off the top of my head, but is far off from today's hp ratings/ numbers.
And in all seriousness. I would put a 090 up against any production one man saw ever made, as far as power is concerned. They made their power at 6,000rpm, which it was mechanically governed at. Gosh knows what it would have been rated at without a governor. Mine was disabled, and four stroked at 10k or so (I never put a tach on it), and I am certain there was not a production saw that would have taken it. I would have felt confident putting any bar and chain on it, the biggest concern was holding on lol. It would wear you out/ fatigue ya real quick!
