Of course I decided to add a wood stove to our oil-heated house "just after the nick of time." Heating oil was ridiculous here in the winter of 13-14 and moderately expensive 14-15. Looks like they will be paying us to take the oil this coming winter. Good thing I'm not adding wood for the cost savings... Ya got to love it to keep up with the work of procuring and burning wood. I definitely get tremendous personal reward from working in the woods.

Wouldn't you know it, this is the year I took out our oil burning furnace and oil burning hot water heater. We did replace it with a new efficient gas furnace/boiler with BB heat. However, we still plan to burn pellets. My wife will park close to the stove and spend the winter right there!

I got lucky when I put the wood stove in. I was able to 'pay it off' in one year with the price of oil being so high (2013-14).
My original plan for the stove was just to have an alternative heat source for when the power went out.
I was able to heat the last 2 winters with wood.
figure I "saved" enough to buy a splitter this year.
Probably save enough next year for a new saw.:emb: :picard::whistle:

as of this hour domestic crude at $44.75 more softening of HHO if this trend continues!( price 7/29/15 $47.80) me thinks there might be a lot off price pellet sales on the way? cord wood will probably hold as there are so many dealers, from mom and pops to big tree guys. still worth squeezing or shopping around.

1.88 is today's Rack Plus pricing for me.

The pre buy lock in rate is 2.33. Think its time to gamble and just go with the rack plus this winter. As long as it doesnt go above 2.33 I still win. If it spikes, I will have some pellets to fall back on.

I usually use a half tank of oil a year (275 gal). I'll get it filed soon and if prices stay low, I'll use more oil. I'd rather save my wood and use it to supplement the oil when the temps are not so cold.

"This is really just high-stakes gambling." Hate it when it goes like this. I'm used to paying for a product by cost of the product to produce and market, This method is what will the market bare. The sky is the limit.
They are not alone with this. Pharmaceuticals are the even more guilty of pricing extremes. Then they lobby to keep you from buying their product from other countries where they sell the same product for a very different price.

Here's a good one from their comments section.

On Tuesday the price of gas here was $2.349. We had to go to Saginaw and noticed the same price there mostly. As we pulled into a business, my wife noticed a gas station a short distance away and they were the same. One half hour later we came out and it was $2.699 and we noticed that all the way home.

On Thursday I went to town and saw $2.649 around the noon hour. Three hours later a neighbor told me it was up to $2.999. Today it is $2.889. So much for the price of gas going down....

Years ago, Ma Bell was broken up due to being a telephone monopoly. Fuel isnt a monopoly, its a full fledged attack on our wallets. It almost like someone needs a few extra million to fix their screw up, to spend on their freaking kid or whatever they feel like so the prices go up overnight (Or in this case in an hour) and then take weeks or months to settle back down.

    Yes. sickening!!!
And like that isn't bad enough, we have a local zippymart chain of 500 stores that have been price fixing the 5-6 counties around us. They spent years running all the local stores out of business by selling at prices below what the small guys could buy it for. Last year they did over 1 Billion in sales.
