Driving the BX 2660 back to the shed today when it started making a hell of a clanging and banging sound. I thought something was goofy with the mowing deck but the mower was not engaged and nothing was hung up on it. After driving a few more feet the front wheels briefly locked up then went free. I tried shifting out of fwd but that did not seem to do anything. Okay armchair and real mechanics what's the problem here?
Turns out it's not as bad as I thought. There is an aluminum pin connecting 2 parts of the front drive shaft that sheared. It looks like an easy fix assuming there isn't something binding that caused ith pin to shear. The parts were a bit over $4.00
As much of a pita as it sounds you should only use 4wd when needed. When turning the wheels need to slip as they are turning different speeds but are all geared together. A simple turn on pavment will wind it up tighter than dumf's pink panties. Something has to give.
Mine if 4wd is needed a lot (read snow ice) I lift front tires off ground with bucket let them spin and it works. First tell tale sign it wants to stay in 4wd when I try to take it out. Also only use 4wd at low speeds. I respectfully disagree with SKEETER McCLUSKEY my good friend/neighbor has had 3 John Deere a 35 55 and now 75 hp with cabs all have issues since I got mine all bought new.. where my 54hp Bota has been dead reliable. He borrows Bota when his 4wd doesn’t work…. In short some jobs 2 tractors are good We baby JD at top and Beat the Bota
