Well.. the nibbling continues. Didn't do as much as I wanted to this morning, with the rains last nigt and warmish temps, left the ground muddy. And, my wife doesn't like me chainsawing when she's not home, so I did what I could before she left. Generally, I don't like to be by myself when sawing. Anyways.... That's a double row of rounds and half-rounds. Even half, that red oak is heavy. Can't imagine how much more heavy it would be, once the sap starts running in a few weeks. But, it sure does split nice! Laying down the wood "rails" sure does help with the sawing. Keeping the logs up off the ground. Careful planning, and using my peavy along with gravity.. rolling the log off the pile, one at a time. As M2theB told me, it's always fun avoiding being crushed. If the ground firms up overnight tonight, I hope to move the rounds to their proper location for a long while. Pics of that tomorrow, hopefully.
I had never met M2theB before he showed up to help. Good people on this site, for sure. I hope I get the chance to help him with a project of his someday. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Heavy, man! Like 500 lbs. per log I bet. Watch your toes! Nasty weather coming Wednesday, hope you can get them deployed the way you want.
Oh... there's going to be wood where I don't want it for weeks and months to come. Which is ok. This is wood that won't be stove ready until 2021/2022. I'm good for 2-3hrs of moving/stacking wood like that by myself, and then I shut it down. Wednesday's weather is what it will be. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Here's the growing pile of rounds and half-rounds and my 1mp wood wagon. Can't justify to myself the $'s of getting an ATV and pull behind. But, it would be nice to have one for this effort. Here, I expect to stack the rounds between the thicker trees and, once I'm done moving the rest of this rack up to the house, I'll have a double-row of rounds in it's place. The pile is little bit smaller today. Haven't even touched the rounds M2theB cut for me.
Wow there's still a lot to go! But that's good! Lucky for you, not much snow out of this storm for you. And warm temps this weekend!
Keep biting that elephant Mike and you'll have it down in no time! I like the cart - one Mike power, right?
You getting there, Red Oak looks reall nice - never had it... even though there are some trees around here. How many cords CSS, you think youll get out of it?
M2theB, good on you!!! I am new here by a couple of months, but man, glad to see sharing of help going on! It makes the world go round so much better!!!!
Nothing too exciting today. Some more cutting and halving. Way too icy to try to move them in the wood wagon. Good thing I'm in no rush. It's nice cutting at waist height then rolling the rounds to the ground. Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk
~nibble..nibble...cut...split....move-n-stack~ Stack is about 5'high. Doubt I'll go any higher. Used to have one stack of splits here between the trees.. Now I have future splits.. I need to measure the length of these rows. I"m thinking they are a little longer than 8ft. I'd have a little more than a cord here, if that's the case. I started to feel it in my back, so it was time to use some different muscles. So, I cut and split some. These I'll move tomorrow. Wash... rinse...repeat...repeat..and repeat..
Not much working on the pile over the next week or so. Heading up to the White Mtns for a long weekend, starting Friday. Woo hoo! Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk
Oh yeah... it's getting smaller. There's been a few logs rolled off the top, cut, and hauled away. The reason it looks like it's not shrinking, is because I've been cutting off the ends. Once logs were roles off, I found that there was "daylight" under/around a number of logs. So, while they are at about waist height, I've been cutting away at them. So, the pile isn't as wide as it once was. I suspect that once I get back from my trip, there'll be some real noticeable changes to the pile. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
