Thanks. It's a hell of a ride so far. Fortunately they are really good kids, and so resilient. The older boy is 15, and his dad passed in a motorcycle crash 3 years ago. While I wasn't with their mom anymore, I have known him since he was just under 2. Pic of him when he was almost 4. Well I sure didn't want it to happen this way, I consider myself very lucky to have them together. And we even get along 99% of the time! But I did opt for the new furnace so we wouldn't have to do wood so much that they would hate it. We are gonna cut and burn for enjoyment now, not necessity. It is a step I was gonna take in the next 5 years anyway as far as that goes.
Sorry for your loss. Sounds like you are doing a great job with the kids. Also, nice fell cut. First rate work.
Just getting some sort of ready to burn wood from the top branches, and a couple forgotten rounds from the tall grass that are still way too green. Got them some new carhartt coats too so the school coats stay nice.
Guess it's been a little while again! We got another big tree from the same lot next door- someone new owns the land, and they are pretty cool. Gonna build themselves a little place way out back. I mentioned that another tree had died out front, on land that he owned, and asked if I could have it, he said go for it! So here is another 40 inch truck, about 90 foot tall. This one didn't fall the way I wanted, but I didn't really think it would, and it worked out well in the end, able to buck the 9 biggest rounds in the air and let them fall clear! Dropped, bucked, and relocated to my splitting area inside of 30 days! Limited time to work on it due to daylight hours and rain. Only had two good frozen ground days to work with, the rest I had to wait for it to dry and use my small tractor.
This is probably a little shy of a year for me. My mom's house is much bigger then mine, and she has an older fireplace insert, no fancy EPA stuff on it, so it eats a lot of wood, and she is right next door, and 82, so I share..... my house is small with a modern freestanding EPA stove, but then I make up for the savings by heating an un-insulated 33x32 garage with a double 55 gallon drum burner, although most of the time I scrounge trashier wood for that. I don't heat the garage all the time, but when I do it thinks nothing of going through a rick, sometimes more, in one weekend.
Thats a biggun. It would've got hung up if I felled it! Wonder what it will yield when finally stacked? If you remember, let us know dwyleecoyote. Good luck processing those big rounds.
A fair amount of luck came into play. We had 6 wedges pounded into this thing, and they were changing the angle in our favor, but it became clear it was too much to overcome. We just kept going, we really just needed it to not go straight towards the road, only because of the amount of debris we knew was going to fly. I had a guy at the road on traffic watch. it angled away just enough, and when I knew it was go time I didn't get to see it fall, I was in a full sprint the other way with my saw! We won't know an exact amount, there was a pretty good pile of other stuff already going. The general consensus is between 4 and 5 cords though.
