Went back through and realized this was the thread I started when I dropped the first one that died over there. Second one was a blow down in November 2020 that was alive, but had a hollow trunk, and struck this one, apparently shocking it enough it did not survive the summer. So this is the third big oak.
Yes indeed. I was super relieved when I found it to be a solid trunk, since the one nearby had been hollow. My dad lost 2 saws over the years to big hollow trees.
That is a biggun. Nicely done guys! Was that your first cutting with your 500i? My first was with the 36" bar on a huge pin oak. Its gonna be fun bucking it up for sure.
Yeah, first run on the poor thing that has been sitting quietly waiting for its day for like 6 months or so. Just enough to warm it up. I'll take my time breaking it in. I usually start at the top of a tree like this, but this time about 16 feet of trunk is hanging off of the ground. I am going to mark and crib it so that the pieces will fall away from the cut. A little prep work to make life easier. Plan to get through the first tank of gas, then if a friend to two is available, start splitting. At least into quarters that I can handle.
Its fun to cut with. Wait until you try a shorter bar! It sucks down a lot of gas though. Pic from last February...its first cutting.
Yeah, as soon as the other oak is dropped, and the big trunks are bucked, there is already a 25 inch light waiting for it that it will usually have. 36 is only for special occasions, lol.
I dont use my 36" bar that often but it is nice to have, plus a saw that handles it too. Hoard on and cut safe!
Got the first 8 rounds bucked off the trunk with the 500, while my uncle played around with an ms250. Didn't work too hard, just wanted to make some weekend progress.
I think I am gonna let the stump be. I encountered what was likely remnants of a barbed wire fence when I dropped it- didn't cause any noticeable damage to the chain, but it did throw a couple sparks. Hate to get greedy on the stump and find a post. I think I still have a 32" chain from a few years back that lost a tooth or two in a similar situation in an even bigger maple trunk. If I run across that, I may give it a go.
Had mine for almost a year. Ill use it to buck wood my other saws can handle, just use a shorter bar. Bucked some white oak today with it. Its a gas guzzler but man it screams!
Haven't posted in a while, life has kind of gone off the rails around here. My 2 boys occasionally seen in the processing/stacking pictures are now permanent resident helpers, as there mother passed in August- ladies, get your hearts checked out- she was 44, thin, beautiful, and didn't eat and drink the garbage I do. Just putting that out there that anything can happen, be prepared. Anyway, here is another monster in close proximity to the others I have taken down the last few years. about a 40 inch trunk, already had a lean so just a small wedge cutout, but I did have to cut from both sides with the 500I and 36 inch bar. I was nervous because this tree has been dead almost 3 years, so I didn't know what I would find in the truck, so I was sure to have a trusted spotter watching for movement/twisting, and even placed a few felling wedges just in case. It went down perfect. I am way behind on the firewood this year, but fortunately the top branches from this are mostly usable this year. Also, I have all new propane furnace, central air, and duct work almost done.
I’m so sorry to hear about your kids mom It sounds like you’re up to bat now, and I’m sure you’ve got a lot to teach your boys as they begin turning into young men. Keep ‘em close as you all navigate this grieving process. Good to see you out enjoying something you love with someone you love! Keep up the good work
