Most of the time, walnut is highly over-rated and mills usually won't pay what folks think they will. In addition, if it is a yard tree or one in a fencerow, they will turn up their nose at it. We had a neighbor who had several walnut trees and they dreamed of a big paycheck. In the end, the wood went for firewood because no mills wanted it.

I picked up some rough sawn Walnut (as well as some Sass, Hard Maple, and I think Oak) down at an Amish sawmill in Hillsdale way back in about 1993-4. Someday, I'll use it for a piece of furniture or something.
I don't remember it being expensive.

Walnut is in hot demand around here. Some timber companies will take trees as small as 10"diameter and contract with you even for a small amount.
I can remember about 5 years ago they didn't even want it!
