Never knew what those funny round paper balls that came off oak trees were and I found the biggest one I'd seen today on a hike with the pups. Made by a female wasp that lays it's eggs on the emerging leaves, larvae develop inside and spawn another generation of eggs laid at the oak roots to repeat the cycle.

Thanks for the info! I always see a a few of these on the white oak in my yard. I always see wasps too come to think of it. I thought they were immature acorns.
Yes, we get some of those annually. We just don't concern ourselves with them. Sawdog, that is a good description of a wasp.
