This year the white oaks are mostly loaded but not everywhere. We have a few that are normally heavy bearers but only had a few this year while in the neighbors woods, about 100 yards from us the whites are producing like they've never done before. Normally the reds outproduce the whites but not this year. Walnuts are heavy producers this year too as are butternuts. Last year, practically nothing.
We've had a crazy acorn crop this fall. Apparently a few species of oaks are all having a mast year. Feels like you're walking on golf balls in some spots . Here's some chesnut acorns I picked up at work. Look at the size of those nuts!
When I saw "mast trees", I thought of sailing masts for boats. Strong yet flexible. Oak masts were highly desirable.
