Dead, barkless Black locust has been good for me, as well.... Checked with the moisture meter of course.
Well, this makes me unhappy All I have is a bit of poplar :stacke:and I will burn through that in no time.
There was the tree at my sister's house; I am going over there with The Beast and see about it; it has been on the ground though. She said it felled sometime last year.
Other than it being night time right now, what are you waiting for??? Sink a chain in it tomorrow, split a log, and stick 2 pins in it....
Yes, now the tractor is running I can start hauling wood to the house and split it; my splitter is electric so I have to get the wood to the house. Shed? nothing really, the splitter was in the shed when I split the wood; I guess the significant is that it has been out of the sun so only air drying. I don't know how the summer got away from me; I guess because I kept waiting for my friend to come down. If I had tried to start the tractor two months ago, then I would have been aware two months ago that the tractor needed work. I need to do better than this. And I still don't have the extra section of chimney installed because I am nervous getting near the edge of the roof and holding that up above my head to install it. Waiting on my friend again to help me.
I was going to take The Beast out today; got her ready to go and then rains moved in and stayed; so I turned my attention to the tractor and it is now running. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
I'd say make sure your back-up heat, whatever that may be, is ready to go. Maybe we'll have a mild winter.
Do like everyone else that doesn't have a tractor. Carry it. Yes, many loads and heavy, but if we all waited for a friend or a tractor or even a rainless day.....we'd be in the same sad shape for wood that you are in! It is already too late for this year and probably too late for next year. Sorry to see that you haven't grasped this whole wood hoarding thing yet! It won't get done unless you do it...must not wait for others.
Lets see, I'm no math person mind you but in having devoted say 1 hr per day x 60 days (waiting on a friend) and producing only 1/2 a face cord per day (4' high/4'long x 12" for simplicities sake)...that's roughly 1/8 cord. So a cord of wood every 8 days...60 days x 1/8 cord=7.5 cords??? Eric VW said it very well "To each his own burn needs"...The utility company thanks you.
Just thought I'd throw in my two cents on "not following the rules about firewood." Maybe it's just semantics, but to me the idea that we should all be a year (or more) ahead in our seasoned wood supply is a goal, not really a rule. When we aspire to perfection, we should be happy when we make progress, but that does not mean we should be unhappy if we fall short of our goal of being perfect, or even if we take a few steps backwards in the process. I don't particularly like an excess of "rules," since they often serve to pressure me into being something I don't feel like being at the moment, and end up making me less productive, not more productive. I do NOW have one very strict rule about woodburning, however: I will burn no wood before its time. That means if I don't have a supply of seasoned wood, I will scrounge, borrow, or buy before I burn anything green or wet. If I have to buy or borrow, I am not "breaking any rules." Rather, I am dealing with the reality of obeying the one rule that really counts to me. How I choose to accept that reality is up to me (and yes, when I have faced that reality -- multiple times -- I have chosen to be grumpy, which is why I am no longer behind in my wood cutting.) Of course you hate the idea of buying firewood this winter when you have a wood lot. Who wouldn't? But let me offer the example of my brother, who did just that, for several years, even though he had a huge amount of downed and fairly dry oak in his woods. He worked full-time, and had an enormous garden that took a lot of time, and ended up buying all his wood. Finally, he made time to cut and stack. But that didn't all of a sudden make him a "better person"... he was fine just the way he was, even when he had to buy wood. And I bet you are, too, so don't be too hard on yourself... just be a LITTLE hard on yourself
There are some standing dead locus near the house; no hauling needed. However, there may not be anything left to them. However, I can try The Beast out for starting.
Corrections; I may put off any cutting and just haul what is cut. I am getting some winds and cutting in a wind is not something I want to do; will see how the day goes.
I am guessing the winds is from a front passing through, the hurricane/tropical depression is way too far south.
