thanks gunner, im gonna get to work on hauling logs home today and get some pics posted up. ill plan on keeping the food pretty simple (chili, burgers/dogs etc...)BYOB if you are able to hang out after the chainsawing for a while. i missed geniusfest last year and have been itching to get to a real GTG ever since. Ill have more time next summer than i did this summer for sure so ill be down for sure!
cus_deluxe will you just be cutting cookies with the saws or other things planned? You are correct that with the date, anything can happen with the weather. Frankfort is not out of the question for a day but lots going on. Will definitely keep this in mind.
Still looking at the possibility of this happening probably in April. Probably looking at the 16th or 23rd.
hey dennis, i actually meant to ask that to people, what activities are normally part of the routine. As said, ive never been to a GTG so have no frame of reference and was thinking mostly cookie cutting and bs'ing. And of course tending the bonfire. i mean i can get a splitter over here and you guys can finish splitting my wood pile haha :stacke:
I also had the thought of just for fun 40cc and/or 50cc race in some small softwoods. I might have a couple bits of garbage that could be given away as prizes haha. muff mods are the extent of the mods on any of my saws, but bring whatever obviously. also if you have any stuff for sale or trade that would be cool. What else??
First and last pics show some 5' lengths of 18-20" ash, 2nd and 3rd pics show a couple 30+" stems that will come home thursday. Theres a stand of some sort of poplar trees not far from the first pic, so i plan to harvest a couple of those for some small wood for fun racing. ill be on the lookout for more wood as well. Doubt ill get anything bigger than the stuff in 2nd and 3rd pics.
I'd say the gtg should be open to whatever folks want. For ours, we want to plan on a little bit of everything if possible. Felling, bucking, skidding, splitting and stacking. After that, perhaps some party time! The problem with just cutting is you always have noise and that also cuts down on the chatting time but can still be fun. Also, everyone is not interested in how fast a particular saw can cut wood but then everyone is also not interested in how fast a car can go either. Each to their own. One thing I say to make certain of is to introduce everyone. It is nice to know who is there and who you might be talking to.
Great ideas, and that makes a lot of sense. I have lots of dead ash that could be dropped and bucked in the woods behind the house. This time of year its a bit hard just because the lack of daylight. assuming the weather cooperates ill be out and around by 7 or 8, but i certainly wouldnt expect any others to arrive that early. where i am its been too dark to see properly for almost a couple hours now so figure by 3 or 4 the saw related activities will be wrapped up.
That's one problem with winter; the short daylight hours. But, we put up with it. Just imagine what it has to be like in places like the Yukon and northern Alaska! Dead ash. Ya, we're also blessed with lots of it.
Rainy an crappy here for a couple days but forgot i took this pic a couple days ago getting some bigger wood. Weather looks a little chilly but calm for saturday.
Looking good!! Wish I had some more vacation time! I'd be there for sure!! Those are some large logs!!
