Sorry about the layoff but I am glad to see you are being positive about it. For about a year now my company has slowly been laying people off and everyone is on pins and needles. We know that come January there will be more layoffs also as one project is ending and there doesn't seem another one to fill its place.
Our paper mills here in Maine are starting to fold like dominos. One just announced yesterday in Lincoln that it was being sold to a company that will tear it all out and sell the pieces. Same happened in Bucksport recently. Many more on the brink or already downsizing, or gone. They were pretty up front on the news last night admitting that the employees will be the last to receive any $$ package, if any at all. Other mill reps admitted when their mills closed, the employees were left holding the bag. It's no wonder so many folks now won't even listen to promises made by company leaders and/or politicians of any stripe. Way too much BS on parade...
Hey thats not true, I have always been the one to run the wood stove anywhere I go, just call me Sparky...Lol...The guys cook and I tend wood stove...
For those that have been following this, I have a job interview on Wednesday with the team manager, team lead and possibly the director of infrastructure. They opted to forgo the phone interview based on the strength of my resume. Hoping that is a good sign for Wednesday. The drive will be about an hour and a half on good days, and longer on other days. However; I don't mind. Long drives to work have been my history, and I'm ok with that. Plus my car gets 45mpg on average which helps a great deal.
Best luck to you. Hope you find a job you will be happy with. I would hate the 3 plus hours of driving, but that's an old me.
Unfortunately without getting to political, RI is the worse state for big business. Few large corporations are in RI. It just does not make sense for them from a tax standpoint for themselves or their employees. Most Rhode Islanders commute to Massachusetts or Connecticut for jobs. Your next question will be why don't I move. There are a couple of reasons behind that. I bought my parents house. (Not sure that was a wise move.) To see it, we'd currently take a nasty beating. One that would not get us enough equity to purchase a reasonable home either closer to Ma. or in Ma. Next is our kids. My son is junior, and I'de prefer no to move him to a new school for his senior year. My 14 year old will be in high school next year as a freshmen.
I bet in a year or two you will find you are better off than you were last week. Better job, maybe a new living situation, who knows. Good luck.
boettg33 I can easily relate to your situation and I too would find it difficult to move, especially with a freshman and junior in high school. I remember one time we had to move out of state and they started after me in the spring. We finally made up our minds during the early summer but one condition was that we'd be moved before school started. Our kids were young at the time and one was just at the point where he would be just starting school. I just could not imagine him starting and then switching in a month or two and the same for the other son who was just a year older. So, I said we move in August or we'll have to turn it down. They accepted and although we had to do things a bit differently because the new plant was not even built, it worked out fine because I got to drive a semi around and make deliveries which also allowed me to meet many of our customers which really proved to be a good thing. So I did that for a couple months then helped set up the new place and did some hiring. All went well and we hope it will go the same for you.
