You never know the difference you being there made. Sounds like you got the college kids out of a bind. Was it due to their negligence? Was it due to their inexperience? I’m sure you have an idea, but what May have happened if you hadn’t been there? Might they have been hurt trying to get out of the bind themselves? I gotta believe they learned a valuable lesson through your example and willingness to help them. Nobody hates breaking things more than me, I totally get it, but we never know the difference we may be making. I hope there’s no more hiccups:thumbs:

I'd prefer to run 3/8 on my ported 2150 but when I do, that line of thick plastic around the clutch drum (that would protect the saw in a chain derail) makes getting the chain on and off the saw difficult. Did you notice? For that reason, plus the fact that I acquired several loops of .325 with saws, I just decided to keep it on there.

How long a bar are you running on the 350?

It had/has an 18" bar. I was tempted to go to a 24", but those are very expensive and I have a 24" on the 372 I just picked up, and a 28" on my ported ms390. I might swap the 28 onto the 372.

I noticed that the 7 pin 3/8 rim is about the same size as an 8 pin .325. That's roughly 14% more chain speed, with less torque, bigger cutters, bigger drivers dragging through the bar, and a heavier chain making rpm recovery harder.

This is what it did with the .325 chain

They were inexperienced operators and unsupervised. They are in a "chainsaw course" but I don't know if the teacher knows how to teach or understands the fundamentals of chainsaw operation. The situation they got themselves into could have been fatal.

Man, that thing wastes no time! I’ve been impressed with the .325 on my 550xp. No disappointments

I am curious how do you smash a bar. Did you mis-read something when falling a tree or when bucking one up.

Sounds like you were in need of a new bar anyways.

I was trimming a dutchman, the tree broke and pinched the bar and then drove it into the ground.

dutchman? I’m going to just ask for clarification and what’s a Dutchman.

not going to try and guess a meaning.

A dutchman is a bypass cut in the hinge. It can be good or bad, depending on what you are trying to do. You can google dutchman cut and see what I am talking about.

His answer to me in similar circumstances (different details though):
Galatians 6:9 Let us [me] not loose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.
My take away from Him is something like "I got this, do you think I didn't see what happened?"

There are different types of dutchman. There is a bypass dutchman which will destroy the hinge and there are felling dutchman's, which are used to control the fall or swing the tree. The young fellows in this case had tried to cut a notch and made several severe bypass dutchman cuts on the same hinge, roughly halfway through a small tree. The tree was rotten in the center and it broke off.
