If I remember correctly.?.?. Emerald ash borer is limited to a low temperature of -36°F total fatality, and at -22°F there starts to be cold related partial kills. I can't remember where I saw this so don't quote me! Looks like I should be safe yet another year after the temps we had this past week.
Seems like a PR move by those who don't understand the dymnamics of wood burning-cut when conditions are acceptable, seasoning wood, etc.
Funny that they put that in the Detroit Free Press, No place to get Any wood out anywhere near Detroit, Only in the northern part of the state , Yellow areas
I remember reading something somewhere that extreme cold will also slow down the beech bark disease. Don’t remember the specifics other than it said that if the snow was deeep the stump would be insulated enough to prevent the fungus from being completely killed off.
I can cut in the Yankee Springs State Game Area this weekend too they say. Used to get a permit for $20.00 good for one quarter. Got to be more of a pita than it was worth. 50' from a trail or road, no gas powered haulers, etc. Did get checked by the C.O. once just to make sure I had the permit. Never any issues with them, they were always decent. Previous C.O. would ask me to drop certain trees on occasion because he knew we could do it safely. He was a great guy. Always said he thought the state should let more cutting go on because of the millions of cord that went to waste. He'd let us fudge pretty far outside the rules because we didn't trash stuff. Just cut private land now & I can't even stay ahead of that. Got 12-16" of snow now that's pretty well covered up the downed trees.
In PA...we have the Alleghany National Forest....there ..you get more wood, more time n less money than any of our state forest....go figure
When we lived near Gaylord I cut on state land. One time I went for a permit (free at that time) and they guy knew me and what I did. He asked if I would be interested in cutting some live trees. It turned out to be only a mile or 2 from our place and was small area (a few acres) that was mostly maple. Well, of course I would! All was well. I figured perhaps some CO that maybe did not know would harass me but I never saw anyone. Figured I might even get turned in by some nosy people but if I did I never heard about it.
I’m about a mile from state land where cutting is allowed. I took a side trip to see if there was any chance of taking advantage of this and grabbing a truckload or two after going to drop off trash/recycling at the transfer station. You’d be well past your knees in snow trying to get to anything worthwhile. I figured it’s not worth the hassle today but hopefully someone out there who needs wood can take advantage.
State land cutting is different from usfs. On state land, the tree has to be down already. @P.M.P. cuts on usfs and can cut down if it's standing dead
