This is the reason I keep the old saturn around. I save over a thousand a year in fuel over my 22mpg ford ranger. If I were to go to something that gets 17 mpg your talking g even more money.

That's exactly why I wasn't looking for a 3/4 ton+. I know the 6.0L well and while it's a work horse, it's a fuel hog. This is my daily driver so a few extra ticks in the MPG department are well appreciated.

This thing is getting decent mileage as full-size pickups go. I'm going to run a few tanks through it yet before I pass final judgement but so far it is about where I expected.

The 5.3 in the 355s (that's the Isuzu, Hummer, Colorado and the Canyon) was equipped with AFM as far as I know? (EDIT: I stand corrected!! I still wanted one... ;)) I'm guessing the reason they fall short in mileage is the 4L60E trans bolted behind the V8. If there was one thing GM dropped the ball on with those trucks, it was not using a 5/6 speed automatic especially with the 4/5 cyl trucks. Would have done wonders for drivability and fuel economy. Hell, my Canyon would get the same MPG if I drove it around in 3rd rather than D unless I was doing a long highway trip. (I had the 3.73 rear like 90% of all the 5 cyl trucks did). Truck was never able to keep the converter locked while cruising up the slightest grades. And would always unlock the converter in 4th rather than keep it locked and downshift to 3rd. Regardless of speed/load. You could overheat the trans pretty easy towing in the hills if you did not pay attention to how it was shifting. Didn't help that the PCM managed the shift points like there was a V8 under the hood either. On cruise control, Would lug the truck along at 1800 RPM WOT rather than drop a gear and reduce throttle angle. I could hold the pedal steady, drop it to 3rd and watch it pick up 10 MPH up a hill just from the engine getting back into its happy zone.

Yes mine lugs just like that on grades on interstate . It also will shift so strange. If you accelerate pretty fast, not floored but quick to get to speed and then back off to slower accelerate the thing will shift all the way to the top and you have no more acceleration . So you hit the gas a bit more and it drops 2 gears races the engine and throws you backwards. Or if your cruising saw 49mph and want a tad more acceleration and hit the gas instead of one gear it drops 2 and the same engine racing thing jerking you backward?

The truck is way better than the 07 dogs dakota it replaced with the v8 , as far as 4wd ground clearance, comfort and ride quality. But the 4wd does not hold anything to the dodge that locked the axles and turned all 4 tires instead of the strange system in the canyon with what seems like semi open riffs.

Start assuming some manual control of the trans. Knock it into 3rd just at the base of a hill, leave it in 3rd for all driving under 60 mph unless it's super flat. Watch it get even better mileage and stop all that wild shifting. Yeah, the downshift to 2nd at WOT and then back to 4th thing is irritating at best on those.

The Dakota of that vintage drove like a shopping cart IMO. :zip:
