    Looks like somebody re-re-re-tried to re invent the wheel... We all know wood is completely unpredictable while splitting. I agree with Ray and Pete,

    Hydraulics are the way to go!

    I would try it as it may work great.. Don't know until you try it! I don't know the cost and use my electric splitter when possible as that's enough work for me...

    That has been my experience also. Beech is the most variable wood that I have come across. I've had well behaved straight grained pieces that pop apart and I've had wavy grain pieces that are rather difficult. Even worse are trees that have the bark disease. They can be downright impossible.
