It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been through SD. Speed limits still 75 mph?

The ac causes a bigger loss than I expected in mine. I figured it was a combination of the compressor, plus the louvers in the grille opening up when the air is on. I think the louvers make a bigger difference than they get credit for.

I don't tow, but I know my 6 cylinder Explorer's mpg starts dropping noticeably over 70 mph. 40-69 is the sweet spot where I get 21-22. I've not driven it much over 75, but watching the mpg drop helped me keep my foot lighter when I was commuting to work.

Hauling a ton of pellets inside only drops it a couple MPG (in tow mode). But, that doesn't change the aerodynamics of the vehicle by much except the squatting from the load. I've only done that a couple times for any distance when I've gotten CL deals. I'll also notice a drop to 17-18 MPG when I put on snow tires , even without it being in 4WD. Just putting on some good AT or AW tires would drop it (I changed from performance to AW's on my car and it dropped from 40 to 35 or so)

What MPG were you getting without the boat being towed?

And the gas tank says 36 gallons, but the most if been able to put in is 23! What the heck. That’s with the tank in empty. The miles left says 40 so that’s like 2 gallons max. Anybody else not able to put 30+ gallons in the tank?

No problem putting 30+ gallons in my 2014. Except for how long it takes!

My 96 F250 Long box extended cab got 15mpg at 70 with a 12' dump trailer full of green Beech. Got about the same pulling the tractor to Chesaning in May. Did I mention it's a 7.3 powerstroke. That's a beauty there Dakota Hoarder ! Nice buy.

But you have been in a truck towing at over 80 mph+ recently! Definitely single digit mileage!

When I look up the 2016 Ford F-150 gas tank size, I get 23 gallons. Doesn't mean it wasn't special ordered with a larger tank.

If a larger aftermarket tank was put in, did the computer need to be reprogrammed?

Those active grill louvers are a big difference maker.

I wait until it shows 25-50 miles left on my 36 gallon tank. It takes 30+ gallons when I run it that low. Last fill up was 33 gallons, and I get fuel discounts from my local grocery store. They have a max of 35 gallons on the discount. When I'm saving 30-60¢ a gallon, I get it all and bring the gas can. Usually I put 2-3 gallons in the can.

Google is only partially correct. The standard tank is 23 gallons. There's a larger tank offered from the factory that's 36 gallons. Mine has the big tank. It's nice to be able to go 700 miles on a tank if you want. By then, you need to get out and stretch at least anyway.

Yep, mine had the extended tow package, I even double checked on the sticker to make sure it had the 36 gallon tank. The last time I filled up the pump stoped at just over 20 gallons, but I noticed the gage was only at about 80-90 percent full. I’ll try to top it off all the way full next time and see how much I can get in.

I wonder if the fuel pump was replaced and the incorrect one put in? It would seem weird that it would be replaced so soon, but not unheard of.

Yes, I like to Google oddball things that don't pertain to me :)

Took me a second to figure out how the wrong fuel pump would cause this issue...but yeah, if the gauge sending unit was incorrect... or bent...

Took me a bit to decipher how as well, but yeah, it's possible. One way to check would be to drive it well below its "empty" on the gauge/ meter. Just bring gas cans( and the capless gas full spout) to fill it up if the truck actually runs out. ;)

I took note this weekend. AC on the whole time since it was 90°+. 17 mpg towing my boat. Probably averaging 45-50 mph. Tops about 60 mph. 20190608_161536_HDR.jpg
