New Project

Good work woodlands. That is thoughtful of ya. Doing things for and keeping up with family is always good! This is a great time of the year too!

 

I'll be starting the next batch tomorrow or Monday night, some will be for us and 12 will go to my wife's family, her nieces.

 

Zap I tried a coat of some cherry stain and some plain with satin polyurethane.
Less than pleased with the stain - seems to overtake the character of the end grain.

I think I'll stick with a coat of urethane on the first batch, and get some epoxy next time I'm in town.

 

I think that's what Scotty recommended (the urethane) when I was starting mine, since I have the Tungston Oil, I'll put that on the second batch too.

 

I started the second batch of coasters today, I sawed up 36 out of that ice storm damaged Cherry.

I hand sanded all of them with 60 grit and 100 grit, if the winds aren't that bad tomorrow I'll pick up that sander.

I think this time I'll only put three coats of Tungston Oil on each side along with two coats of wax.

 

Yes the end grain will soak up stain big time.
If I am staining something with end grain on it I will sand the end grain 2 grits higher than the rest to try and keep the color even

 

Tried some plain mineral oil at the suggestion of my former coworker. He said it helps prevent checking.
It does a nice job of highlighting the rings without making real dark splotches

 

I sanded these tonight with 100 grit on a sander, I'll hit them tomorrow with 150 grit and the next day with 200 or 220, can't remember if I picked up 200 or 220.

 

Things will probably move along pretty quick now

 

I hope to start putting Tungston Oil on them by the weekend, that should give me enough time to get them finished before the end of next week.

I put five coats of T.O. on the last ones with two coats of wax, I'll try to get away with putting three coats of T.O. on these with two coats of wax.

 

I think 3 is enough

Just a couple from the last batch of coasters, these sort of have a face on them.

I started last night with 100 grit, tonight was the 150 and tomorrow night is the 220.

 

A day late but it's done, it's different than the picture I posted but this is what the boss wanted.

I finally used the tenon cutters I bought, I think it was a 3/4 inch tenon cutter I used. Before I could use it I took the drawknife to it so I could take enough off so it would fit in the tenon cutter.

I almost bought a set of those one time at a woodworking show but I didn't have a project in mind and spent too much already so I didn't buy them.
Do you have a set of them?

 

I bought three, a two inch, 3/4 inch and a 1/2 inch, I should've bought the one inch too.

 

Did you hone the blades after you got them?

 

No, this was the first time I used them so they seemed sharp.
