The place I bought the belt, that's all they had, I guess a call to Lowe's can be made tomorrow. They way I figure is, your drink is going on it so what scratches will you see!
Idk that cherry is a prime candidate for tung oil, you're not going to get a whole bunch of depth from a piece of end grain, that being said. Tung oil is a very labor intensive finish, a very nice one but labor intensive. If you're not going for show quality just use a Spar urethane
I did one coat of Tung Oil tonight on the first side of 18 coasters, you can see the one on the right is just starting to soak it up.
I did get another coat on the coasters, not a huge difference so no pic, I'll be putting a third coat on tomorrow will some 600 grit sandpaper.
I'm just curious did you put finish on all sides including the bottom? If you finish all sides, the wood will stay much more stable, and will help prevent warping or cracking
I stayed doing the one side ( I'll post a picture why tomorrow night) so I have four coats on, I'll put a fifth on tomorrow. I think they look good, I'll post a picture after the fifth coat dries.
On the right in the first pic is what I started with, on the left is one of the coasters with four coats on it. The second picture you can see how some of the tung oil made its way down the side to the bottom after I used the 600 grit sandpaper to apply the tung oil. I'll sand this off on about four or five of them, that is why I stayed doing the one side, I flipped them to put the first coat on when I noticed it.
The first side received its final coat tonight, I should have the second side done by Sunday afternoon, then I'll put some wax on both sides. I did a total of 18 this first run, I have two sisters and one brother, they will get 6 each.
There are other brands but Minwax Paste Finishing Wax is good, you can get it anywhere, I use it, once applied and dried it is hard like a finish itself and can be used as I finish all by itself. Once you apply you let it dry for a little bit, before you wipe it off, but don't wait too long or it will be very hard to get off, especially if the humidity is low, I think it says like 15 minutes on the can but, I say 10 minutes
I did the first coat on the second side this afternoon, they should be finished by Saturday afternoon except for the Wax.
The second coat is on the last side, I did pick some Minwax Paste Finishing Wax up this morning, that's all they had.
Yeah!! like I said , you can get it anywhere, it's easy to find. Most other brands of finishing wax like that, the only place you can get it is at a woodworking store or online
