For sure oak. I've never noticed such a deep darker color like this. It's almost a purple-ish. The true color didn't come through in the pic. Wondering what species as all the rounds had a different looking bark.
NICE Jason. Ill work thru lunch most of the time too. Missed the reposting. Out with the old and in with the new. Can never have enough wood, or in my case room as well!
Ive had pin oak be dark like that, also where it grew can influence the color. I see some with really thick bark, maybe rock oak.
Got back to this honey hole to mill the other day. Oak is no joke! Yesterday, I got the majority of the firewood that was left. Worked my azz off alone but I got it done. I went through the trouble of taking my Wheel Horse and wagon because the yard was too wet to drive through. And where I park is too far to carry the wood. Reason I needed it, where I'm cutting was beside the edge of the property, which has a paved access road to access a cell tower. And I'm about 50 yards up hill. Didn't even get one load in the wagon and the Comcast guy showed up and unlocked the gate. Told me I was more that welcome to back my truck up there. Woo! Got one big load packed in and it appeared a second load would get it all. Sure was awesome to back the trailer close to the wood. This log was about 22" at the base. Nice and straight, rounds heavy as heck. After I got that 30 footer in the trailer, I decided to use the wagon,
She was squattin' even with 80# in the bags. Nice load! As I was unloading, and A-10 flew by at low level. Awesome. Back onsite and someone locked the gate, so I had to wagon the rest. Wasn't enough to fill both so I decided to take the tractor home this load. All cleaned up. What an awesome day yo be in the woods. Pushing it with the trailer a bit... This billboard spoke to me each time I passed it. Wife snapped this pic when we went back with just the truck to get the wagon. And the haul. 2 decent logs left onsite. The were buried in the bush. Told Tony next time he has the Bobcat out to pull them out and I'll finish off the job. Also planned to make him feet for the bench slab I left as seen in the milling thread.
Great work Jason. PITA to hafta schlep the tractor but we do whatever it takes to get our firewood, dont we? Lots of hard work = lots of nice firewood! Enjoyed the sequence of pics! Wooded area reminds me of the state campgrounds her and i stay at.
Some of the most beautiful looking oak I’ve ever seen. Almost like a cross between red oak and walnut
Yep, really liking them. That was a great score, thanks again. Definitely nice slabs. The wet-ness of the wood maybe making it appear walnut-ish, definitely 100% oak.
Early spring this year, I hit Tony up for the dead trees we talked about when I got the wood in this post. He didn’t mark them so wasn’t sure what was dead and not. So this summer he marked em. Fast forward to today, and I’m back on the honey hole. I’ve got a LOT of wood on the ground. All oak. His Bobcat wouldn’t start so we just loaded me up w/ “light” stuff. One truck and trailer for today, but much much more in the works.
Some of what I fell. Go ahead and critique my hinges/stumps, lol. This was a double leader, fell as one. Next up, Must have missed pics of the log. Then the scary one. No idea this was hollow when I notched it. Tried to leave more holding wood with a higher back cut. Fell where intended with wedges.
These 3 gave me the load to take home. They were kinda close to his house. This is the some of what I have down. 2 leaders in front were cut up into 6 sections that he will skid down to the gate area and the one behind was a biggin! I bucked most to 48” so he could manage them in his bucket, then I can buck in half for my stove. Next up, Sum beach. Got a hanger. Haven’t done that in a while.
