I'm going to guess closer to 5 or 6 cord in that stack. 10¢ / kWh includes delivery and the monthly charge if there is one ? Residential Heating rate ?
I hired a guy with a dozer and excavator to cut and stack the trees. They were part of the clearing for the house.
Welcome. Your log piles will get you started, after that 35 acres will more than keep you in wood just from what Mother Nature gives you
Welcome, JH. Have you been heating with wood, in the past? Don't ignore the poplar for inside heating. It might be ready to burn, before the good stuff is dry enough. Poplar is also good for shoulder season. I like the look of your stack on the hill.
Welcome TheJohnHarris ! You aren't too far from the legendary Eric VW ...and a few others too! As mentioned above, don't ignore poplar, pine, soft maple, boxelder and the like for getting your 3 yr supply going...the top half of dead standing Ash trees is often ready to burn soon too. You'll need some good dry fuel for that new stove...
Welcome to the forum John. Looks like you have a very nice place there. New to burning? Perhaps you'd enjoy and benefit from some good reading: Primer on Woodburning by Backwoods Savage You can read this online or even download it.
TheJohnHarris Welcome to the site . Great guys and gals here. With 35 acres of woods, you should not have to cut down any trees for decades. It will be hard enough keeping up with the trees that Mother Nature knocks down. Years ago I was told that one can expect a half cord of wood per acre for sustainable firewood harvest. Hope you are not planning on burning more than 17 cords per year
Welcome to FHC, looks like a great location there. With it being a new house I’d imagine the insulation will be quite good
Welcome TheJohnHarris . That's beautiful country in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have a splitter just like that and have been very pleased with it. Man, that would be awesome to have 35 wooded acres!
Count your blessings to be able to have your own woodlot. Looks like a beautiful piece of property. Looking forward to more pics and updates as you work your way through the pile. What chain saw/saws are you running? Won’t belong before the boys are doing it all. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Thanks for the warm welcome! Wanted to answer a few of your questions in one post. Yes, that is a small pond behind the splitter. It is fed by a natural spring 50 yards up the hill. I'm 47 years old and have not lived in a wood heated house since I left my parents home for collage in 1991. We had a wood stove insert and a fire place growing up. My dad, brothers and me split and burned at least 4 or 5 cords a year. The new house is very well insulated. We do not have air condition, not needed at this elevation, but we do have hydronic underfloor heat, including the slab in the basement. An electric boiler the size of a suitcase heats the water to 130 degrees when activated by thermostat. We have 3 zones, 1 fore each floor. I'm really impressed how well it heats the house and how little electricity it consumes. That being said, I can't wait to get the stove installed. Haven't posted here in a while. Life has kept me busy with the new house. Still finishing up some inside trim and painting. Bigger priorities came up and did not get the wood stove put in yet. Just purchased a new Lopi Evergreen stove. It is being installed on the 29th, can't wait! Oh yeah that stack off wood ended up being a little over 8 cords and I've added a few more cords.
