As posted in another thread, I never run the stove above 3. With the crazy temps, a family member cranked the stove up this morning till setting 4. I came home, and said what the heck is that smell. Turned my high heat tape on the pipe brown in certain places, I guess it cooked the glue off, and man is the cast iron hot, even the thimble is warmer then I like. I struggled for so long with leaks on this stove, I hope I do not have problems with my seal at the adapter now The only way we got the stove to stop leaking was silicone around the gasket, and use high heat tape, that is why I never tried to run it this hot. Ok sorry for the rant!
My Mt Vernon has ramped up to medium high for the first time ever. I guess -45 windchills will do that.
Darn smoke, we only got to -17 here in MD with the wind chill. I could not imagine those temps, that is some kind of cold.
On level 4 of 5, the stove will be fine. The smell is because you hit a new plateau in High temps. If your stove doesn't see high temps in awhile, the oils, dust, etc in the metal make a "smell". My 1st burn in the Quad every year made that smell. I just had my Enerzone turned up to 50% yesterday and it made a "smell". And that's only half way up the cursor (or a 2.5 heat setting equivalent to your stove). The tape likely exceeded its rated temp, but a little wrap of some new stuff and its good to go. We are all good here, I was not worried about the beast, that thing is built like a tank. I just do not need to fight with leaks again. I am down to 18 bags of pellets, It is time to make some phone calls I need to restock! I am not sure what is carried near by!
I'd check the big box stores first (Lowes, HD, & Tractor Supply). Brands to look for are Timber Heat, Premium, Somerset, Lignetics, Hamers, Stove Chow, Fireside Ultra, or Presto Log. Tractor Supply has their own brand, but ask the manager if they are the Lignetics-bagged ones....some stores got them, others didn't (depending what mill they were near). If any of them carry anything else besides these, let us know. The HD near me is selling everything at the ton price ($4.18/bag). Lowes is $4.38, or $4.18/ton only. Not sure about TS.
