You're in the area of one of the regulars here, T.Jeff Veal But I do know, Georgia is a big state. I have super Good friends in St. Mary's, Georgia. Cool place...
If I can jam it in the stove, it get's burn't! My ugly pile always get's used up first during shoulder season. I try now to waist anything. There are days I'll look at something and think, (why bother) but then I just gotta haul it away somewhere, so it gets cut up and split...
Yep, 2 different trees. We have a wet weather pond, it would get 2-3' deep in winter, it had a nice stand of the Tupelo gum in it. It grows similar to cypress, it would have a huge butt, the a lot smaller trunk. Old timers would cut a chunk out of the butt and carve dough/bread bowls from it. When dry, it's light and strong, last a long time. Black gum is very tough to split. Got some several years ago, managed to split a couple rounds, threw it in the trash pile...a friend heard about it and came got some. He carved some bowls and spoons from it. That bark in the first picture looked like tulip poplar, I noticed when bucking, it didn't have the green heart, when I split the first piece, I knew it wasn't...
Gainesville, Buford, Braselton...? I lived in Oakwood and worked in Gainesville for 3 years, '85-'88. Moved back home to middle GA after that. Be nice to meet you...
OH, it will!! It was me having to fight through the "Briars, stickers and Yellow Jackets" to get to it!
A book I have on Delaware trees mentioned that black gum was prized for wagon wheel hubs. When I split rounds I take off the 4 way wedge and start splitting firewood sized pieces off of the round. If I try to split it down the middle my 35 ton splitter can't do it and it gets stuck on the two way wedge. But splitting splits off of round it does fine though it does kick the two stage pump to it's lowest flow range. I don't believe black gum has much decay resistance if it's constantly in contact with the ground. Like for posts, for instance. Sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) my splitter splits with the 4 way pretty easily.
I'm familiar with that area. Had a friend when I lived up there from Hoschton. I would drive from home to Milledgeville, go up 441 to Madison, 83 to Monroe, 11 to Winder, then 53 into Oakwood. Nice drive through the country
Yup!! I found years back, start on the edges and work in. My splitter is 35T as well, anything over 8" in diameter it has a HELL of a time trying to get through it !
Thank's Brad, My A$$ is beat up though... Some of those rounds were Heavy! I had 2 full trash cans of Noodles! Pics tomorrow in the totes.
Now that everything is cleaned up and in totes, here is the pics! I'm maybe at 2-1/2 cord between the Mulberry and the Cherry/Gum haul... 6-1/2 totes. OH, and had a "Visitor" early Sunday morning looking for a tasty sparrow lunch!
