To clarify what I consider heat output to be:
Wood stove has been burning and warm and down to coals, ready for reload as heat output has diminished to the point of no longer maintaining desired room temperature.

When we recently had night time temperatures in the mid teens, and daytime temperatures in the low twenties, I was literally reloading the heritage every 3 to 5 hours in order to maintain enough heat output to maintain an indoor temperature of low 70's.

My period of significant heat output was literally 3-5 hours. And, that being said, I could not increase room temperature at all. My new BK puts this to shame running on stat set to 1/2.

Pyro, did you have a pipe damper on your Hearthstone? Just wondering. Your times with it do seem short, but I’m glad you’re happy with your new BK…that is awesome…and on a 6” pipe.

No, I did not have a damper on it. Just a straight shot up. No elbows at all.

We ended up the same, straight up through the roof. I strongly presented for a damper (and Hoytman ). If we don't need it what's the harm, right? We get hurricane strength winds here in winter, why take the chance- turns out our dealer lives on the summit at 9K elevation with similar or worse winds, so I persue it. If needed we'll have to dismantle the pipe, so far in a craziest mild winter in a decade we have not had to.

That's really good to know! I also live in a very windy spot and was really concerned about not having a damper. Last week we had very strong 30-50 mph winds and stove performed flawlessly. We can see 60+ on occasion but after last week, I'm not concerned about having no damper.

Plus, for me, since I'm running the BK 40 on a six inch pipe, I didn't want to introduce any further restrictions to my exhaust path. So far, so good. Stove is heating exactly as I hoped it would. Last night outside temperature was 22°, indoor temperature is 77°. I had thermostat set a hair over 1/2. Exactly the indoor temp I was looking for and stove wasn't even working. Bring on the cold weather! I'm almost anxious for it (actually, I'm not)!!

Here's a question for the group.

Our temps right now have been hovering in the 20° night time and 30°-40° range daytime temperatures. I'm burning the BK 40 with stat set to about 1/2, maybe a little more most of the time. My wood is 3 years seasoned, under cover and dry. I will occasionally split one of my splits in half and check moisture with a meter. My moisture content is always 12-15, and even seen lower. As mentioned above, I have no damper or bends in my exhaust, straight shot up.

So my question is, is a pretty dirty glass normal for this BK 40 under these conditions? The bottom lower 4-5 inches from the corners are pretty dirty, with the center of the glass slightly "brown".

I've read, it can be from poorly seasoned wood (definitely not that for me), or poor draft.

So, since I'm only running stove at half stat setting, stove is not even close to needing full draft capabilities., so I can't believe that's the problem.

When I was burning the stove hotter for a period of some colder nights, it did seem to clear up a bit.

    Any input is appreciated.

Try burning black rocks…you get used to looking at a black box.

I’d almost be willing to bet the farm that a manual pipe damper would help that Hearthstone, especially since you said you had a lot of wind. Since you still have it you’re in a perfect position to prove me wrong.:D

The thermostat on the BK may be why you’re getting by using the 6” pipe in those windy conditions as well. Who cares if works though, right?:dex: Seriously, it might be worth the experiment. Don’t know until you try…and we might all learn something from it.

:DI'll be picking up some black rocks today! :D

Really makes me wonder about if I'd had a damper on the Heritage if I could have extended heat output. Based on the performance I'm seeing from this BK, I think the Heritage was still undersized for my heat requirements. Maybe if id bought the Mansfield as I had originally planned, I'd been ok.

I'd like to try it, but swapping 500+ pound stoves to experiment is a bit more of a feat than I think I want to "try". Don't think I can convince my wife it's be fun just so we'd know. I've been successful ducking frying pans so far, but don't know how long my luck will hold out.

If I end up installing the Heritage in my upstairs, I will definitely put a damper on it whether I need it or not. Better to have it and not need it than vise versa.

Someone needs to make “Y” pipes with a diverter in them (like downspout “Y’s” with diverters) so we we can set 2-4 stoves side-by-side.:D

Normal for a BK at anything other than high output. Here’s mine right now. Haven’t cleaned it all season. IMG_2660.jpeg

Well, that gives me peace of mind. That's pretty much what my glass looks like. I did let the fire go out today (hit 50°!) And cleaned ashes and glass. I was beginning to think it was being caused by the 6" piping. Thanks for letting me know it's just the nature of the beast!

PS: Love the dog! Somebody likes their warm spot by the stove!

I'm wondering the if the cozy blanket on the recliner is his or the dogs?
I was concerned too, that happened here except at one point it was glittery. brenndatomu mentioned creosote can dry like that. At first I was alarmed because I've never had creosote before but just like he said, it was the low and slow burn we did the first couple weeks. It got cold, we burned it hotter and it disappeared. Irony, pellet furnace has a nice flame but air wash vents are clogged from family "cleaning" the glass so it's always covered in brown gray flyash, this glass is mostly clear but mostly red glowing logs lol.

I cleaned my glass today, and now, 3 hours in a low burn (1/2 stat), lower glass corners are already a brown haze. Oh well, I like the heat. Stove performance could not make me any happier.

Our dogs rank pretty high in the household. If he needed to borrow my truck, I would give him the keys. IMG_2545.jpeg
