Another user mentioned an inducer. I had never even heard of one of those. I will definitely look into it before changing out the chimney!

    Day three update:
December 3, 2023, 8:45pm. Outside temp 35° F, house temp 77°F. Loaded stove with almost full tote (42 pounds of wood). Turned thermostat on stove to about 1/2 for the burn.
December 4, 2023, 7:30 am. Outside temp 25°F, house temp 76°F. Very large hot bed of coals in stove.

So far very pleased with the BK 40 King!

    This stove is amazing.

I'm having a little trouble loading north to south at this point, because I cut alot of my wood 20-23 inches for my boiler that failed. Hence, most of my wood will only go in E/W at this time.

One thing I'm noticing. Blaze King makes the claim that this stove could potentially hold 80 pounds of wood. I'd have to say this claim is laboratory testing only with wood cut to exact firebox dimensions etc. I would have to say in the real world, maybe 50 to 60 pounds which is still substantial, I'm not complaining, but just trying to keep it real for those who wonder. For me, 50 pounds of wood is a medium sized Rubbermaid tote filled level to the top.

Wood species I'm burning: Oak, Maple, Cherry, and Ash

If you're not having any problems with smoke spilling into the room, I wouldn't mess with anything. Sounds like you have fine draft as it is.

I'm with you 100%! So far, no changes to my configuration in the works. Everything is working flawlessly so far on the first few days of burning with this new stove. Old saying, "If it works, don't fix it!"

I bet you could get 80 lbs of shag hickory or osage orange in there easily!

Wow! That's something! Wish I had those species readily available!

I bet there is some around there somewhere...but yeah, not as common as the trees you mentioned having.

That's something I haven't been able to connect the dots on. I've seen ppl talk about lbs of wood in a stove, but that depends on species, density, moisture content etc etc. Where a stove's capacity is a volume measurement, which has nothing to do with weight. So I don't know why weight is even stated...?

You are exactly right. That must be some new measurement that some brainchild has come up with. I had never even heard of pounds of wood mentioned until I started browsing some of these different forums. While I realize there are x number of pounds in a cord of wood, there are so many factors that play into that, it nearly makes it irrelevant. The only reason I reference pounds, was because when I referenced the amount of wood in my tote, there are a million different sizes of totes available to purchase. The best thing to do would have been a picture.

Because weight tells you how many BTU's you have actually loaded up in the stove (all wood is the same BTU/lb...well close, softwoods are very slightly higher, but not enough to matter) as long as you are comparing the same moisture content.

Once you learn your stove, and how your home heats, all you need to know is how many lbs of wood to pile in for the weather that is coming. Species almost doesn't matter (as long as you can fit enough lbs in)

Now that makes a nice fun fact. Now I know I wasn't wasting my time weighing my wood. I was only weighing it for my own curiosity and to let other people know, so I don't think I will weigh the entire bin throughout the winter.lol

When I mentioned to my wife that next year she could weigh all the pieces and tally them up, I didn't get the response I would have liked to have gotten. Long story short, not happening! I have to run out and grab the skillet in the front yard that barely missed me and went through the window.

brenndatomu makes a point that for the savvy user they'd be able to make some calculations off the top of their head.

I'd wager that the pound measurement is also something the average person could conceptualize without grabbing a calculator or trying to figure out what BTUs even were.

Maybe it's just my setup, in the room I'm in. But I have to base what species I'm putting in, and how much, for what kind of fire I think I want temp wise. I.have to think speci3s and amount (kinda volumn), I can't equate that to poundage. For instance, I'm not sure I like hickory, even though I thought I would, and it's great wood. Gets too hot on me. And I couldn't just use a piece or 2 by itself and have enough fire in the box....well I don't think I could....

I'll have to ponder more on this weight thing and see if I can get any sense out of it in my application....
