After returning home from our trip to my In-laws (1.5 hours one way) at 7:30pm. I didn't think I'd get the time to run the 365 and do a muff mod before dark..

But.... Because my 390 already has the same muff mod? I ran the 365, then swapped mufflers from the 390xp...
    20160327_202545.jpg

Once I finally got back to the basement after the test? I completed the muff mod on the 365.. I open up under the deflector as much as I can, then make the rectangular cut out in the front.. Same exact set up on the 390xp.

Saw was retuned after putting new muffler on.. Both runs were at 13,000 rpms. The muff mod allowed for more RPM, but to keep it on a level playing field, it was kept the same.

The all stock saw was about 5 seconds (some a little over) and muff mod was about 4 seconds (some a little over). So a 1 second reduction is about a 20% gain.. All in about 25 minutes worth of work (opening under deflector, making new rectangular hole, and cutting new screen). Man does it sound and run better (feels faster than what the time states)!!

I do have a new aftermarket muffler that will probably end up on the 390 or 365. It has a small pipe in the front corner, rather than the top outlet with deflector.. I'm thinking that pipe should sound pretty good :) Plus it keeps that heat from melting the top shroud.

I have one of those piped mufflers. If I remember there is not much different sound.

Also once you return it will be a faster than 20% gain.

Saw was retuned... It's in the post (twice) that you quoted. First time was that it was retuned, 2nd was I put it right back at 13,000 rpm..

I also stated it could probably be faster.. But I kept them on even playing fields..

Quoting is helpful.. If read first ;) lol

Thanks bud.. Brand new 20" RS chain and did both tests within a hour hour so temp, humidity, etc was the same.. As well as tune and RPM ;) noted above

I guess I missed it. I just read both were tuned to 13000 to be fair.

Ok I really read it and all I see is that it was modded and both tuned to 13000 to be fair and you got 5 sec and 4 sec.

It sounds good higher than 13,000.. But wanted to keep it fair.

20% is still a good gain for just a muff mod!!! I'm happy with it and it sounds so much better!! :dex:

Anyway....semantics but yea they sound better when modded.

And I expected at least 15%. And I'm sure when u tune it higher it is faster.

I love how that muffler mod looks. I need to do that to my 372 and make it a triport.

These Husq benefit a lot from air alone!!

That front port has been said to be a bark burner. If it cuts fast enough? It won't burn bark.. Also, maybe that was the only outlet in those saws? If yiu have 2 or 3 outlets? Not much air will be coming out of it.

I've seen way to many work saws with mods like this now. It's a must have in my book.

I've set bark on fire. This was 30"+ wood though. Cuts are a lot longer than 4 or 5 seconds in that stuff. That was with the top opening as big as allowed and a screen in both. The stihl 066 dual port will get wood hot as well.

I smoked bark before with...I can't remember what saw? It was 24 to 28" class stuff. I think I had the 650. But if I remember ...the tree it was on was the one where I just kissed the ground. I pushed it one cut longer and think I smoked the bark since the chain was dull and saw sat in one spot longer than normal. I think that was the one??

On like 40" stuff I have just started to see smoke with the same saw and sharp Chain...just cause it sits in one spot pivoting off the dogs.

I've had the bark get warm bucking 50-60" stuff with stock openings only but the saw was in the cut for half a tank seemed like.

This saw probably won't see much 20" stuff.. By next winter, it will only see 6"-10" stuff ;)

My 390xp may see some bigger stuff.. I'll be sure to report back.

If it cuts fast enough (fast saw/sharp chain), the muff shouldn't sit in the same spot that long to burn bark.

Not saying it won't happen or hasn't happened. Just seems as though the saw would have sit there for an extended period of time.

In the big wood if you pivot off the dogs for a long time before you let it cut down I bet that 390 burns 60" wood

For the small wood I'll be cutting, it should be fine.. But as stated above.. I've seen A LOT OF work saws done like this.

But.... To add to this, almost all builders use some sort of deflector that points straight out of the front. So whether it comes from the front of the can, or the side (pointed right out the front)? It's shooting forward.

I should've clarified that. The wood up here isn't big. At least the little I cut. Heck, I haven't needed longer than a 20" bar in forever. The last time I needed a big bar, was this..

And I had help.. I was running my 036 Pro with 25" and a buddy had a 440 with 28".

    BIG WOOD.jpg

If I'm cutting that big of wood?? Wait? I wont... After the load you seen above? I stick to under 20". When bucked to 18"-20" lengths, a 20" diameter piece of wood is heavy.. With no log lift? I'm so good.. I'd stop burning wood if I had to cut 60" DBH wood.

I like cutting that big stuff if there's a tractor or something to move it. If not I'll noodle and make it into pieces I can handle.
