AKC Britney Spaniel “ Bandit” I was able to get a spruce grouse this morning on the way home from work. Already started scent training today, along with basic obedience. I brought him home yesterday.
I had grate times with my Brits. The springers in the avatar are sisters. Funny thing about brits seems the light bulb turns on about the time they turn 4 least wise that was my take on them.
Cute pup. I miss my Brittany I had. She was a great Hunter. Not many Brittany's are black and white. Gotta be an American Brittany vs a French Brittany. Right? Is the breeder still calling them "spaniels" ? I know some people still call them "spaniels", but they are closer genetically to Setters and Pointers. The AKC dropped the "spaniel" in 1982.
That’s me that called them spaniel. I have not looked at the pack of AKC papers I have. I grew up knowing them as that. This is my first non Lab.
Great looking pup you got there. Enjoy every minute you can. They are without a doubt the best buddies you could ever have. We have two labs that some days I want to strangle when they are acting like two idiots but wouldn't change it for anything . Defenetly mans best friend ! The love that you get back from them is worth every second.
Last time we got a pup I wanted either a Brittany or Springer Spaniel. I go out of town for work and this thing appeared the most useless dog ever bred.
Fully understood. It's been all labs for me since my Britt. Britts are great dogs, but man do they have a lot of energy. As a hunting dog though, that energy is what makes them probably the best upland bird dog. Mine was a machine. She wouldn't take any treat while hunting, except parts of my sandwich lunch. Seeing how much energy she'd use while running all over the fields, I just started making a sandwich for her as well.
So my wife was wrong about the puppy she bought, all of you were right in your???? I was just able to look at the AKC papers, Bandit is a English Springer. Dear Lord I love my wife, she had paid no attention, when we talked. She loved the pictures of the puppy so much she forgot to ask her friend (the breeder). Good news was after work yesterday I was working with Bandit and a grouse wing. He follows scent, I threw one while he sat and watched it. When I released him, he tor after it, sniffed and took of with his new prize. After 10-15 seconds of running, hopping and bucking, i gave a short whistle, called his name and he tore a path to me to bring his prize. Hardly ruffled the feathers and gently put the wing in my hand, and was so happy to earn a treat. I think he may just work as a bird dog.
Haha. Springers are great dogs. So happy all of the time and love to hunt. Need to work on keeping them close. Meadow sometimes hunts without me.
I just spent 40 minutes with Bandit, his instincts are point on for what I have read on the field Springers. He is real birdy retrieves sits and drops the wing at my feet, when he goes to set he spins and faces the direction my feet are pointing, then drops. When he hears birds tweet or fly by he spins and faces the sounds. What a pleasure this training cycle was, he makes me look good. Super happy!
You're gonna have a lot of fun. My current dog is from bench lines and she's the only springer I've had. She's been super easy to teach. Lots of energy outside but she dials it down in the house and has perfect manners 99% of the time. The other 1% accounts for when she's near water and loses her mind wanting to swim.
