Today was one of the few days it wasn't clouded in. Been a while since I been there and first time doing the train. That was a worthwhile trip considering its been in service since 1866. Not that I look for leaf changes but i haven't noticed any so far here. And yes they have a few watering holes at the hotel, we tried a couple just killing time.
Pemiguassit look out, I was coming from the east, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's right after the hairpin.
Any Shaws will have a quart of McLure's pure maple syrup. McLure's is made in Littleton, NH. Cost $17-18. They usually also carry a couple of other NH/Vt brands for a bit more. I really like McLures dark syrup and buy a quart a month or so (I use it on everything - including my scrambled eggs). BTW - don't bother looking at Wally World.
Thanks for the offer, but no. It's for personal use. I was just looking to find out if there are any bargains , seeing as how I'll be in the area. Now, if you can latch on to a large amount at a decent price ahead of next year's gtg, I'm sure folks would be interested in divvying it up. Especially those from away.
I think I brought a gallon to GTG, so everyone knows, most of the large sugar makers put syrup in 42 gallon drum and sell it to wholesalers. If you buy a lot it saves money because a lot of the increase in the smaller amounts is due to the packaging expenses.
The bottle should tell you If I only had room for a 42 gallon drum. Of course keeping it refrigerated would be an issue. I know, it doesn't HAVE to be refrigerated but it keeps critters from being enticed.
Well, that is what the bottle says (and it also says you can freeze it ), that is a CYA statement - just like for butter. As fast as I go thru the stuff nothing is going to grow in there anyway if I put it back in the cabinet. It has about a month shelf life after opening, keeping at room temp, if you don't do stupid things like stick a dirty knife in it. However, not attracting critters is important to me, and my fridge doesn't have much to do anyway, so I refrigerate it after opening for fun.
absolutely even though the high sugar content binds up the water making it unavailable for most fungi/mold there are some xerophilic organisms that will thrive in the "dry" environment - think of that wonderful blue mold on bread - you might not want to eat it. Your body eliminates mold spores all day long, you really don't want to overtax your system with high concentrations. We used to keep syrup on the counter until a big colony of mold/yeast/whatever plopped out one day. In the fridge ever since - even the imitation stuff. Even the home made imitation stuff goes in the fridge. Why take chances ? diarrhea and vomiting are not fun activities. For most.
Looks like a soggy few days coming up in the White mtns. I have a gift card for Labonville, that needs to be used in the Gorham store. I'm thinking I could use 50' of 1/2 rope to use in my rope puller. I have 150', but that can be a pain when a shorter piece would do. Road trip! Gorham is straight across Mt Washington from where we'll be staying. I'll probably end up circumnavigating the mtn. I think a trip to Polly's Pancake Parlor, will be in order. I'm sure I can get a quarter of maple syrup there. Not too nice weather for scenery. Oh well. Hopefully the overcast won't be too low. The White mtns still look nice when shrouded in clouds, if they aren't right in your face.
Polly's sells the maple pepper that I posted in the smokehouse a few weeks ago if you were looking for some.
Trip is off.... For now Mrs MikeinMa took sick, needing to follow up with her Dr tomorrow. Watching the Patriots game, in the ER. Oh well. We'll get up there sometime.
