New EPA regulations proposal released yesterday

'73 is a young'n - my last house (circa 1885) still had the original coal boiler probably retrofitted to the house around the turn of the century, it had been converted to oil sometime in the 60's. Also had a couple of home built 'wood stoves' made in someones back yard out of scrap steel from the shipyard. The original single pane windows tended to let snow drift onto the furniture so when it got cold the stoves and boiler would be running pretty much non stop.

If a EPA paper pusher ever saw the global warming I was pumping out they would have condemned the house immediately.

I gave it a quick peruse. They are going to regulate OWBs. They are going to tighten other standards but they say that a good portion of the wood burning appliances are already at that level. They estimate that it will cost only 15 million dollars over 8 years to implement it while saving society, get ready for this, ...... 4 billion dollars in the same time period. We are all going to switch out our stoves and get rich!

There is a lot of drivel on how to test stoves and what kind of woods they should be tested with. Washington State wants Doug Fir while other places say Oak.

Rules about having to remove and scrap a non-complying appliance if you sell your house.

 

Oh, I'm sure I'll be switching out stoves. It just won't have to do with anything the EPA is proposing.

 

I really don't see why to many folks would want to keep a smoke dragon unless there really strapped for cash!! Having to toss 4 cords a year into one in a mild climate and waking every 4-6 he's to load a wheel barrow full off wood into one!!

I think the current standards are clean enough and they should be pushing proper burning habbits and dry wood. If this new standard goes into effect it will result in a loss of jobs and won't make the air any cleaner. I do however agree the OWB's need to be reigned in, they are smoke machines in many cases.
