That’s a shame how the insurance treated him. I hope he made out favorably. Loading into the dump trailer is a bottle neck, but without a log loader and a firewood pile mover. There will be a bottle neck somewhere. I’m glad I didn’t go bigger it would just show the bottle necks quicker. I’m really happy with the production of this machine for my purpose. In all honesty with how I’m processing wood, I could have went small and been just fine.
I haven’t gone through and read the whole thread yet. Yeah, that’s a pretty cool machine and all. But I really enjoyed the pictures of you taking it home. It was a trip down memory lane for me. I have been to each place pictured, sign post forest in BC,Mucho lake, seen the welcome to the Yukon sign. That was the trip of my lifetime thus far. Thanks for the trip!
Thinking about the firewood pile bottleneck, in the dirt business we like radial stacker conveyors. It allows us to run a portable crusher with just a loader feeding it, and a crusher mechanic. Usually there is a loader to pull from the pile, but it might be loading trucks all day, or just short handed. You could find another conveyor that allows it to rotate as the pile gets big, and then continue processing. Granted you would have to adjust process from the dump trailer, to loading the dump trailer with a tractor or loader. Just a thought.
I think I've said this before but as you and the crew get more accustomed to it you will get better. Operating the machine will be similar to sawing lumber in that you will create a rhythm as you operate it. This is where the production will increase.
I love reading this. Rope, you have been working so hard for a long time. It is great to see y0u get processor and hopefully expand your business. I, and everyone here at FHC are rooting for you!
I’m happy that brought you a fond memory. It’s such a cool trip, it a shame more people don’t get to experience it. I’m with you I love it. My sone that went with, learned he loves trees, the mountains and Alaska. We talked about all the ecosystems that we drove through. We both think the prairie is neat, we just like undulating terrain, trees and mountains to much. The lakes, streams, rolling hills and hardwoods.
Yes, I have seen material handling like you speak. Not sure how that would work with wood. My ultimate plan is to have some of the nice vinyl or steel Quonset hut on mafia blocks. To store and deliver from that.
I really appreciate that, thank you! We have been busier than we could have ever anticipated, the processor have help us stay up with orders. We made 200 bundles of firewood today, got a 100 bundle order and a 2 cord order for next week. We ended up delivering 31 cords so far this month. And been able to enjoy some time off, we leave in the morning for a fishing trip at Valdez. Hopefully we will get into some salmon. The best part of the firewood business is the time I spend with the family. My wife, 5 year sons, 12 year daughter and my wife have been helping. It’s been great to see that my kids are hard workers. They have been learning about hard work and earning money. Funny how they don’t want to spend it.
Nice machine Rope! That’s awesome and so glad to hear it’s working out well. Nice adventure to on picking it up. Really cool you got to meet some fellow FHC members along the way.
I get antsy outside of my natural and preferred surroundings. I once drove to Oklahoma City and it was hard for me to understand why so many live there. Of course it's 'natural' for them, the 'desolation' that I saw. South Dakota was similar but at least green for the most part. The furthest I've been from home but found myself comfortable with the surroundings was in Arkansas. There are areas there that would be hard for me to distinguish at a distance from where I live.
Amazing how when money is earned by the sweat of the brow; when going to spend x you think of how hard you had to work to make it! Kudos to you and Miss Rope for raising children to be adults.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I think most of us here are very similar, in different circumstances and areas of the country. I appreciate ya’ll!
