A maple a few streets over has a few roots starting just above the first limb and goes down the side of the tree about 6'. This tree is showing signs of decay. I wonder if this was old damage from many years ago and it adapted.
That's pretty cool! On a hiking trip I saw a tree growing in the center of a huge rock an the roots were growing down over all sides of the rock. It's crazy how far those roots can grow!
I have more from the same trip. There was probably a dozen more that I missed. Nature is pretty amazing.
I remember seeing this tree when I worked in NYC. It was growing in the ironwork high above the roadway. http://www.nytimes.com/1987/07/11/n...ueensboro-the-cottonwood-grows-very-tall.html
