I noticed my neighbor starting up a saw this afternoon. His PPE consisted of a pair of shorts. At least he wasn't naked. I have told him about hearing protection before and he insisted he didn't need it. As for the rest of his safety gear, I scratch my head, I can't fix stupid. So a little while later his son comes over and asks if I can help his dad with the saw, it apparently wouldn't stay running anymore. I go over and see that he has a brand new Poulan which must have come from Lowes or HD. I guess he must have borrowed the saw he had the last time. Anyway, seeing the new saw I ask him if he straight gassed it. He gives me a confused look and says he put gas in it. After a little more discussion I gave him a bottle of oil to make up some mix and had him empty his saw. He also looked at the manual and said 'Oh, I didn't read that'. Eventually he managed to get the saw going again, although it still had a tendency to stall when you let the throttle off, and got through the white pine bough. Of course he was still wearing his shorts and only his shorts, didn't read that part of the manual yet.
I wonder how many of those cheaper saws are returned to the big box stores, totally shot, within a couple of days of purchase.
Well, I can't judge. My first decent saw was a Husqvarna 350, bought used. It took me a year of occasional use to realize that the reason it wasn't running well was that it had a huge air leak. To a significant extent, that leak is what sent me down the path of learning to work on saws. I'm far better at spotting and understanding problems now, but I certainly wasn't born with that knowledge.
Heeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy what a minute... Pete says don't worry about that dirt divin... ... juz send the chains to him to sharpen and he'll have em back in no time... so, that's what I do...
Or, You can lead the ignorant to knowledge, but you can't make them think. Hope he doesn't hurt himself.
I wonder how much damage had been done before you helped him get some mix in there? Light transfer may be holding it up now... Why not read the manual? I still read every manual. Whether it's a new stove, saw, T.V., gun, etc..
Same here.I read & keep every manual for everything I buy.Only get rid of manual if item is sold or it somehow is damaged or actually wears out.I just sold my mint condition 2001 Sony PS2 with manual/all paperwork, all cables & 19 PS1/PS2 games on Craigslist.Wasnt into gaming that much, hadnt played it in 5 years, past 3 the stuff was packed away in a box.
Good that you are being a good neighbor. If he ever figures it out or not, you did your best. Bet you will never lend him your saw LOL
