Only dead/downed wood: Sugar Maple (my favorite, collect as much as I can) Red Oak (most plentiful wood, collected as needed to fill my inventory) White Oak (available in modest amounts, oddly-dries quicker than red oak, collected before red oak) Hornbeam (Ironwood) (small trees, great firewood, dries quickly, collect all I can find but this is a modest amount) Slippery Elm (Red) (many folks like standing dead bark free slippery elm so the supply is dwindling, collect all I can, dries quickly) White Ash (a lot available as dead or tops from a harvest, limit my collecting to avoid too much in the mix) Rock Elm (rarely available, 100% noodle, GREAT firewood since it dries fast and is heavy, standing dead/bark free) Bitternut Hickory (available in modest amounts, dries quicker than red oak, heavy wood, collect all I can find) Hackberry (available in modest amounts, green wood dries quickly, collect all I can find)
This is what I can think of. I got another today, still don't know what it is. Amazing to me that it's this many. Aside from my complete list on pg. 1, I have 4 choices in my basement currently. Red Maple, Black Birch, Black Cherry and Eastern White Pine. Depending on temps I’ve been running them as blends. The Cherry and EWP on milder days, and the BB and RM on colder days and cold overnights. Colder as in 20ishF or below.
