Timberdog and Cash Larue both win- yes, it's Douglas Fir. If you said "looks like the insides of a 2X4" you got a half point for creativity in the best non-sequitur category - Eric. If you said "Pine" what the hell, you're invited to the party as well, Brad. Easterners! Thanks for playin!!! Here's a Douglas Fir "in the wild" from yesterday - and a firewood volunteer for the winter of 2028...ish.
Your area looks so much like Colorado. It’s a bit greener and not as snowy where you’re at right now though.
I'm fascinated with the trees you have out west. It seems there are two distinct varieties of Doug Fir. Old-Growth Douglas Firs at Candle Creek Where I'm at there are sporadic eastern cedars, hemlock, white pine, red pine, white spruce, black spruce, blue spruce and Norway spruce as Christmas/yard trees. No fir though. When I think fir, I think lumber, and with today's prices I think a lot of money. I'll bet it's a good time to own a sawmill out there.
No, but I just looked it up and now I'm itching to go take my kids there this spring. It would be nice to see some large old growth native trees like that
Oh yeah thats right i forget how old i am. My brother and i went though there a year later and the damage was incredible. If you go there today you can still see several of the dead pine spars with 30+ years of new growth around them. We didnt walk the trail, but you couldnt miss the dead ones.
Sorry, didn't mean to bust your you-know-what about your age Hey, I'm not getting younger either! I'll have to go check that place out. It's strange to think that most of the woods we have here are younger forests that were once cleared for farming.
No worries. Im starting to sound like my parents did 30 years ago! Yeah you will enjoy it. Take the drive to the top of Mohawk mountain too. Great views.
Douglass Fir is very plentiful around here. It’s great firewood. It’s really solid. It’s not Oak. But it burns hot, slow and coals up nicely. We have a bunch of MASSIVE Doug Fir trees on my property. Two in particular are easily 4x the height of my house. My house is 28 feet tall. They are easily several hundred years old. If they could talk, they’d tell some wild stories. I’m sure I could get some good money for them. But they are so beautiful and ancient, that I don’t think I’d ever cut them down. I’m a tree nerd
