As many of you know, a little sabbatical from gathering due to a new job along with a short sighted sale of 7 cord when I had almost 40 has left me in a tight spot for next year. I have about 4 cord of good to go and 5 cord of Oak that may or may not be ready after 3 years (cut in August of '11). So, this morning I come across an ad posted by a guy that was moving. He advertised it as Oak, Sugar Maple and Beech and wanted to sell it as one lot. So, I reach out to him and ask him how much there is and when it was split. Turns out it was split last December of '12 - January '13 then stored in an outbuilding shop. Says he thinks there is between 8 and 10 face cord (his words not mine) but if I take it all I can have it for the 8 face cord price of $400 if I truck it and load it myself. I'm thinking I'm set. Well, it proves to be just shy of 5 cord with about 80% of it Oak. So, I end up dropping the burnable stuff at the farm of my friend who lets me cut whatever I want. He was stoked as he was out. I am the proud owner of another 4 cord of wood that won't be ready for two years Not complaining at all about high quality firewood at less than 90 bucks a cord but I've got to find some dry stuff quick so I can stop sweating about next year Here is the first load for the pic junkies amongst us
That is an awesome price for already split.... But I am in the same boat. I went from 3 years, to about 2, but I need some "good" wood for this year. Only about a cord, but it's a cord I don't have.
I think you're worrying for nothing, that 3 year old oak will work out just fine. Great deal on the already split stuff though!
Indoor stored wood holds it's color nice. Hope it burns as clean as it looks Nice score & price $$ What is your plan for next years wood ? I'm betting the 3 year oak , if it's top covered thru the summer, will be ready to go. Is it stacked in a single row? Possible to get it located in more sun & wind ?
Were it not for my next season predicament, I would be purely delighted with this score. If I knew I could always get this quality of wood for less than $90/cord with a good part of the drying process underway, I would have a hard time rationalizing my firewood hobby.
I hope you are right, but it was split big (8" x 8") and a lot of it is long as I didn't cut it if it fit in my splitter (~25"). At the time, I got a lot of mid range quick drying stuff from my scrounging contacts and prepared this for January wood. The site has good sun and excellent wind but it is Oak...
There is a guy here selling good looking dry Ash but he wants $180/cord for it pickup. Haven't convinced myself to spend that kind of money yet. Need to get my business card out to all my realtor friends so I can get in on some moving deals. More importantly, need to spend some time in the woods to make sure I am never in this place again
I'm in good shape for next winter, but still intended to find up some silver maple right about now to have as shoulder / insurance wood. The scrounge opportunity that presented itself was a small silver maple and a big cherry that had blown over together, so I ended up with about a cord of this mix instead. Poor me. Now there's a guy a few miles away with a huge red oak lying in his back yard. I feel like grabbing the 460 and having at it, but I'm out of space.
Therein lies the problem. I thought I would be able to load the majority of this right into next year's burn shed. Now I've got to turn over my stock so that I have a long term spot for this and have my truck/trailer full until I do so....which means I can't go get more pallets. The trials and tribulations of the urban/suburban burner...
The storage space challenge is kind of fun. I can never hope to accumulate a hoard of several years' wood; 2 years worth is all there's room for even with very creative storage, but that's enough if I'm careful about what I acquire.
If you are buying multiple cords, he may give you a break on that ash. Being in your situation, ash is one of the woods I would be searching for since it dries fairly quick. Also a very good chance it was cut standing dead if you have EAB in your area.
I've done 40 cords at once but that was in a massive heapenhausen that then became difficult to rotate stock out of. I need to build more flat accessible ground on my property if I am going to achieve that king of quantity stacked and orderly. More likely, I will move my processing operation to the farm and only haul wood home after its dry and ready for the burn shed the year it is going to be burned.
I didn't realize until I looked at your signature - 1/7 acre is a small footprint. Is that the yard area or includes the house?
EAB is here but we haven't experienced the supply of wood from it yet. $180/cord isn't even in the neighborhood of what I am willing to spend on wood but its worth asking. He may be willing to negotiate given that I would like 4 cords and am willing to pick it up. His ad says no delivery possible which in this area greatly limits how much you are going to make selling firewood.
S&W, Not sure where in Syr. you are but I may be heading to Waterloo for an emergency repair tonight. Got some pallets I could maybe drop off if it works out and would help.
