    You're only 5'3" ?

From your posts I figured more like 5'5".

    Great axe!

I'm not sure about others but I don't "round house" my swings.

I bring the maul (in my case) straight up from the round (cut log) and over my shoulder. Then straight back down to the wood.

    It takes less force.

For me, bringing the weight of the maul straight up puts more strain on my back and shoulders. I had/have problems with them both. My Grandma told me a long time ago "Don't get old. You won't like it."

I had one for a few years, It was fantastic. I would split in my garage and I welded up a trailer hitch rack that held it great to just toss splits in the pickup bed. I put about ten-15 cord through it, and finally cracked the metal where the pusher/guide was. Gave it to a buddy who might have me weld it someday.

    ^^^ This ^^^

Any effort used to lift the axe up and over from behind you is mostly wasted effort, and will wear you out faster.

I've been toying with the idea of a splitter for a while.

You remind me of...me when I joined 3 years ago. Before long you will have a wooded lot and be burning full time. Have fun!

Good start on your wood. When you were using the splitter way was it, vertical or horizontal. We split vertical. We use a log with a boat cushion on it for a chair. I have back issues so standing and picking them up is a no no. Now Dennis aka Backwoods Savage used to use a milk crate but I do believe he now has an office chair.

You are close. Not an office chair though. It is just a small step stool. After my third hip replacement I had go go up just a little higher. It was actually easier sitting lower but no can do now.

Nice job on the rack, and a good load of wood on it too.

Don't split vertical much any more unless it's huge rounds. 0421201004_HDR.jpg

Hey Cold Trigger Finger, I do that whole round over the head quite a bit myself. Let fifteen pounds of wood do the work......as long as I can get it up there. Are you twisting the axe head at point of impact? That's a trick my Dad taught me if I was splitting and had no block to put underneath.

So are these trees coming off your property? Nothing that size on our property. :(

We have some bigger than that on our place, but they are still standing. Most of the trees we get are from other people's property, either blow downs or take downs.

That is quite an operation you have there T.Jeff Veal. My wife is willing but she's a city girl from the UK. She can't drive a tractor but she's happy to drag off the limbs, cut brush and pop the wheat soda when it's time to relax. :D

My wife was a small city girl too. After we got the tractor, she asked me to teach her...
