Loaded the stove with 5 splits of oak and maple at 4:45 am when I got home at 2:30 there were still hot coals. I raked them forward and put 3 splits on. Right now the fire to be looks like it’s roaring but the hottest temp on the top I could find is right around 400. I think I’m being a bit over cautious. It was hard to see what was going on in the old steel box.

Yes...it may be a bit higher when things are choochin good, maybe...but, it will also maintain decent draft after the peak of the burn is over and the fire is dying down, that's where a masonry flue fails with modern stoves...they don't waste enough heat up the flue to keep that heat sink of a chimney warm and drafting...and especially so if its oversized (greater than 28.26 sq inches in this case (6" flue)
But in your case I think at this point it may be a little premature to condemn your chimney...it may be good enough to do the job for you...time will tell.

I just talked to a guy at sbi he said no problem running the stove top temp up to 900*:bug: I gotta put the pedal to the metal!

I've always heard that you want to limit steel plate stoves to about 800* or so...at least for SOP...probably more like 7-750* for long life...750* stove top is almost hard to stand too close to!
As I'm sure you are well aware, steel starts to have some color to it at, or a little above 900*F.

Yeah I asked him twice he said 900 is no problem. I won’t be testing it but I know I can push it much harder than I have.

That's good to know. I've been easing her in and found a comfortable burn at 5 splits (flue temp between 350 and 400). I should probably expand my horizons for maximum heat in the coldest parts of the year. The down side for me is that I'm going through more wood than ever.

Yeah and no, its like complaining that my go-kart got better gas mileage than my car. It technically did, but it never got me where I wanted to go.
My old stove kept us from freezing to death, but this stove keeps us warm and comfortable. I still call that a win.
I just need to scrounge some dead standing for the tail end of this season to get me by. More reason to hoard I guess.

Mrs warner just came down while I was taking temp measurements. Laughed and asked if I bought the temp gun for the stove. If she knew what I have spent on tools:whistle:

I called them on my Century stove & that’s what I got told also. Probably not for an extended period, but an hour or so shouldn’t hurt it. My reaction was the same as yours.

My Century is like that, it looks like a raging inferno but 18” flue temps are 600* or less & stove tops around between 500* & 675* depending on where my thermometers are. My IR gun proved them both within a few degrees.

Secondary burns making it appear more chaotic maybe?
