There is one of the poisonous amanita family (I think) or maybe one called "The Flaming Archangel of Hideous Terrifying Agonizing Death" or something like that, that looks like a puffball when in its primary stage. The experts say to cut your puffballs in half if there is any doubt as to what they are. If the inside is homogenous you are OK. If it is a young amanita, there will be gills covered by a skirt still attached to the stem to make it resemble a puffball. I just made the Flaming Archangel one up but there are some similar names for real. I am put in mind of one called a "Big Laughing Gymnopilus" (Hope I got the spelling right its been so long). It contains psychoactive chemicals that give symptoms similar to nitrous oxide. When I was in my "Mushroom Phase" I called it the "Big Laughing Gynecologist" which for some inexplicable reason freaked my Wif out! To forestall any questions, No I have never knowingly eaten any psychedelic mushrooms. Although there have been times I wondered if maybe I had!
