Opening that exit made a pretty decent saw into a torque king on mine Add a MaxFlow air filter and you will see even more grunt

Almost every Husq/Jred I've seen modded had this very muff mod. Only reason I did it. Even Randy did it to the 2171 I had (just sent it back to Steven). Back pressure in a saw isn't needed as much as most think. On a dirt bike with a tuned pipe? Yeah... But at my last GTG blsnelling ran his fastest time with his Ported 661 with NO front cover on. Yep. No cover. It sounded nasty and ran even better. If I recall it was a second and a half (or better) in a 20" x 20" Cant. This isn't Brad, it's HittinSteel, but you can see the Cants. Most every saw there had huge holes in the front. Loud? Yes.. Fast.. Yes
I have several in my basement that are the same way. Almost every old saw was that way. Get the heat out and make power.. And yes, KRL's old Poulan was the same way. Just a straight out the front, open, no screened exhaust.
Yea I knew all those real old ones were like that. Was just pointing that one out since you had a video somewhere you could post as well if you wanted. Id like to see the video of brad running without a front cover.
I did them that way as well until I seen bark on fire. No more front exits on work saws. Cookie cutters I still do it.
DexterDay is correct. There have been numerous tests done and the back pressure does not do anything for the saw unless it is a tuned pipe. I make a lot of my muffler mods larger than the exit port of the exhaust on the cylinder and the saws respond well.
Is there a point though that it makes no difference? I have heard 80% what I mean. Would a muffled modd that 90% of the port be just the same as running without the front cover?
may have to look into removing the inside baffle thanks for the replies, as of now I don't plan on porting it but that may change further down the road.
x2 My 372xp it was done that way, as DexterDay 390xp shows. I would avoid it as advised for cutting firewood, or you start burning the big rounds while you are cutting! Sounds good though, that's for sure.
It was scary to see a round smoldering 15 minutes later that we had cut with a front exit like that. Had we not seen it we could have had a big problem.
