The factory ones on my old Champion was pretty easy to bend up....some are better than others, but none of them are super HD...still handy as heck though.
I guess my real issue with the ones on my mtd, is that most logs will end up against the splitter beam, and then the "wing". As you cycle the ram, the pieces placed on the wings will get pushed off. Here's my wings all bent up from use. As you can see, it looks like there's brackets welded to my beam. I'll devise a table for it using those brackets
Oh yeah, I'm not in love with them...just shown as an option (and as an example of how to do a clamp on) I personally like a nice big table, that's why I built a biggun on my splitter build.
I like a nice big table. I made mine 32 x 32 or something like that. Here is a pic of my splitter table.
On any splitter. Bending over to pick up resplits is a pain. I have a speeco as well and that one needs a table too.
Oh I don't disagree, its just that IMO a push through splitter is an even bigger PITA without log catchers/table than a traveling wedge design (most farm/big box store splitters)
Either style will drop the wood on the ground without a table. The push through is nice because you don't have to stand on the spits.
Have used both, and I personally think its easier to catch/keep them from falling on a traveling wedge design...but a table is MUCH gooder either way!
Absolutely agree. I Hate push through splitters due to having to wrestle the pieces back to the push plate to resplit. I will take a traveling wedge splitter any day over a push through. Not as versatile with multi-way wedges, but a lot less work with big rounds.
I made my table big enough to catch the splits after the wedge so I can simply swing them around and hit em again. We like the push through design better because we can keep splitting without touching any splits. It pushes them into a pile and then pushes itself back when the pile is big enough. Makes it real easy to split lots of wood.
I don't know why they aren't more common. I park the wheelbarrow or bobcat under the front and fill er up if I need to run it to the stacks. It's fast and you don't have to handle the wood to get it out of the way.
I prefer them to a h/v one. I like the super split I got to try at Denny's. Add a log lift and that's ideal
I'm assuming if I use the county line style table I can use 2 so I have one on each side and just get longer bolts? That's the way I'd prefer to go I think.
I like a smooth table instead of the grate type and made mine mount like a receiver hitch. Pull a pin and it’s off!
Did you add the hatchet holder and stabilizer leg? Like those 2 things. Also....any close up pics of how you mounted your table?
It is a homemade splitter, so yes, I added the hatchet holder and leg. Hatchet holder is just 5/16” bolt threaded into base plate. Here are pictures of how table goes on, hope they are clear enough.
