I recently picked up a used ms362 and I have used it once. It runs great. I put a 20 inch bar and chain on it today but I cleaned the saw a little bit first. I noticed a loose plastic piece next to the break and it came out just by picking it up. I have pics showing the piece and where it goes. I am also wondering if the chain catcher needs to be replaced.

The one picture shows a screw driver pointing to where the plastic piece goes.

One or both pieces of plastic are broken. The big piece holds the smaller one in.

Chain catchers work until they don’t. Yours looks like has a few more derails on it before it needs replacing

huskihl The first two pics show the same piece of plastic, the first one out of the saw and the other one in the saw. Where is the second piece of broken plastic?

There are differences between models, but the upper piece of plastic that surrounds the top half of the clutch I figured held the lower piece in. I believe I have one out in the garage. I will try my best tomorrow to take a look at it and see what holds that bottom piece in

Thanks huskihl . It would help if I could see what that area of the saw is supposed to look like. Got any pics?

    Here's the full parts diagram.

    Stihl MS 362 Chainsaw (MS362 & C) Parts Diagram

And here is the section on the area in question.

It appears to me that the small plastic piece is not broken and is meant to be there. Part labeled #20.

It looks very similar to the small part on my MS460 that actually had a bolt holding it in place.

I'd order a new chain catcher now so that when it happens you can just slap 'er in there. Yours is almost done.

LordOfTheFlies Thanks for the info. I also found this blow up of parts and noticed #20 seemed like what I was looking at. Stihl calls it a 'cover'.

    You're welcome.

Comparing your image to this image I don't think it's broken, is it? Do you still need to replace it?

It appears to me like the thumb looking protrusion is broken off short.

I don't know. That's not the greatest pic but I think it's got that weird hump on the right side (i.e. the oppose corner up and to the right of your yellow arrow) that matches his piece. The contrast is not great on that pic I posted. :binoculars:

One piece of it may be broken but not enough to cause problems. I may order a new one along with a chain catcher. Thanks guys.:handshake:

Chud You got better eyes than me! hahaha.

For reference I had to order both the larger and the smaller piece for the MS460 and it was $18.97 to my door.

Didn’t mean to drop the ball on checking this out for you. Had a busy couple days trying to run down fixes and parts

huskihl You wouldn't by chance have those two parts, would you? The plastic one and the chain catcher.

I don’t have them as extras. I have a new MS 400 awaiting port work in the garage and they use the same parts I believe

The white piece…..it just snaps in place. These 2 white tabs click into the case. And the front is held in place by the bar plate

Those are some mighty fine pics, aren't they?! :handshake:
