I have a version 1 261cm and have been very happy with it. The new version 2 is lighter so that much better. I bought the 261 over the 291 as it was decently lighter, a bit more power and had the mtronic. With the new version being almost a pound lighter than version 1 it’s a pretty easy decision in my books.

Both are good saws so if you keep what you have and some money in your pocket you will be happy. If you go with a 261 and less money in your pocket you will be happy. Either way life is good:)

Thanks for your input. Had my 290 not have the needle bearing crap out i mightve never considered a new saw. Ive read the reviews and the threads on FHC about the 261 all good. Dunno if id get the carb or mtronic version.

buZZsaw BRAD do you know how to tune a carb?? If yes, carb is viable option if not.. Definitely go mtronic. No chance of too lean doing damage..

I have tried to tune the carb on my other saws, but im not very good at it. Does the Mtronic have the 3 settings screws? I see a lot of talk on here about muffler mod and porting. Could that be done on an mtronic?

No tuning on the Mtron or At saws and yes they take very well to mods.

How's it been running for you? Any thoughts on the comparison between it and the 290 farm boss?

I have not started it yet. I want to get a full chisel 20" chain. I have a few semi chisel for 20" which i never liked on the 290. I guess i could run the 16" bar on it.
Probably using both 16 and 20" bars from 290. I'll sell bar, chain, and scabbard that came with it and use funds for porting 290.

why is that Birddogtg ? Know someone on the forum who had his 029 ported and is thrilled with it.
Is there a difference between an 029 and an MS290?

Most people would argue that the 290 being a clam shell design it is a pain to port and the gain aren't worth the trouble.

The ms261 would take to porting much better and you would see better gains from it. Also the 261 being lighter it more pleasurable to run.

End the end it's your money, port the one you want.

I run a 16" on a zoo city ported 026 and either a 20" or a 24" on a ported 440 that Kevin did. I think the 16" is perfect for a 50cc saw. If we could just get Kevin to do stickers it would add another 10% more power.
